Person - Gettleman and Rivera both to speak to media at Indy this afternoon

I just caught two clips on ESPN (yes i was watching it shame on me) that had Gettleman and Rivera talking about Te'o. They both said they didn't have a problem, especially Gettleman. He said he only cared about what he does between "the white lines." I found that pretty interesting. Maybe we will start drafting some players with more "character concerns."

Te'o's problems aren't that huge. The Honey Badger on the other hand, I think we'd have a problem with. I'd still want the Honey Badger taken later rounds though.

yeah, hurney's philosophy was "let's just see what we can do today and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow." it was all about immediate needs or taking care of the past...nothing preparing for the future, which is why he traded away future picks and structured contracts the way he did. his focus was always on yesterday and today.

now gettleman is stuck trying to fix crap left by a guy with no vision for the future.

one thing that absolutely horrifies me is what would hurney have done to fix this mess? the only thing i can think of is what i saw from him in the past....mortgaging our future so that we can keep old players we feel an obligation to under this philosophy that "you don't let talent walk".

looking at the longview is good...but i think that among other things, he's having to keep in mind we've got a star franchise QB whose going to be getting paid boocoos and boocoos of money, esp. if we become serious contenders. he's got to be preparing the long term cap for that and i think he is, but that's one of the things we're going to have to be expecting when stuff really starts happening with the cap and personnel changes come along.

i'm not buying enthusiasm that williams and stewart will be around long term. only way that happens is if one or both make serious changes in their contracts and since stewart just had his renegotiated, i can't see him doing it again for a couple years. we just can't afford to have all that money tied up there, esp. long term. same with LB because luke is going to be getting paid a ton of cash the year after cam does.

it will be interesting to see how all this shakes out. i just can't imagine it will happen painlessly, but i have confidence it will.

We don't have to really worry about Newton for at least 3 more years. I suspect we will sign him to a mega-deal after his 4th year instead of exercising the fifth year option. When we do it, the contract will likely average 20 million a year but remember that, since we will pay a big chunk of it in a signing bonus, the salary for the first year is always relatively modest making the cap manageable that year. It is when we get out to year 3 and beyond that the cap space tops 20 million. By then he has been with us for 7 or 8 years and we either know he is a deal at that price or we need to be moving on if he regresses. I personally think we will be paying him gladly given that the increase in the cap due to the TV deal should more than handle the difference we will paying him from the 5 million we are paying now. Barring of course another borrowing episode which flattens the cap assuming the TV contract is as lucrative as everyone predicts.

It's expected to be after the 2015 season before the new TV money actually has an impact on the cap. Remember that the 2011 cap number was supposed to be 113 million and it went up to 121 million, then the 2012 season was supposed to have a cap around 116 and then it stayed around 121 again. This year it's gone up again (small amount, but still an increase) when it was expected to stay flat and the original number for this season was supposed to be around 118-120 roughly projected. On top of that the NFL and NFLPA number's were wrong and the player's are making around 57% of revenue and that hurts future years as well. All told, pretty much all of the money from the TV deal that was expected to hit in 2014 has been used up and isn't really expected to make much of an impact at all till 2016 at the earliest.

The expected sharp increase in cap room was expected in the 2014 of a substantial amount, when the borrowing happened it lessened the impact of the new TV deal considerably. Then the players making over the agreed 50% share killed it.

TLDR - 2014 tv money gone and isn't likely to be seen till the 2016 season. So pretty much all the teams are screwed over the next two years.

So....about the topic of this thread....Gettleman speaking (also Rivera but will focus on the G man.)

Love to hear him talk. Wonderful Boston accent that we hear little of in the South. It might seem foreign except for the content. He seems to make a lot of sense. He seems smart. He seems like a straight shooter without being [Yankee] rude. He sounds like he knows what he is talking about. And knowing his history....how hard he has worked and how long he has waited for this chance.....disregarding the cute Boston accent...he sounds like a Panther. I like this guy.

If it increases in 2015, it would help with a Williams restructure. If it doesn't increase until 2016, it still comes just in time for the expected cap hit of the Newton contract which starts to add up in the second year of his new contract which will be 2016. Silver lining??

i really appreciate the little glimpses i've gotten into how gettleman views cap management from season to season. having a sound and stable cap situation from season to season will make it very easy to be active in free agency to fill roster gaps. having huge signing bonus/big bucks contracts on the books for 7-8 players really confines free agent possibilities to budget type guys. this is fine in the abstract, but no matter how much you want to build solely through the draft you still need to shore up certain positions through other avenues due to injuries, busts and whatnot.

    • Never been. Going to a concert there Thursday night. Decent tailgating opportunities in the parking area or no? I see people are going to the beer hall to grab a beer to get their parking validated. Seems like a good plan to me. I'd like to smoke a brisket and do a decent spread of food but I just don't know if the parking setup allows for it.

    • Bryce also has a degree in psychology. He has an uncanny ability to compartmentalize things in a way that allows him to enter his second NFL season with optimism that he can still be the player who was worthy of being the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft despite the kind of rookie year that has destroyed others in his position. Young credits that in part to his past. He graduated from the University of Alabama in three years with a degree in psychology. His father was a therapist in the mental health field for 20 years. His mother was a special education teacher, and his grandfather was a psychologist. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40334565/bryce-young-developing-leader-panthers-year-2
