So it's the offseason - Is Jimmy Clausen's career salvageable?

There's so much hate for Clausen in the Carolina fanbase...but...could his career turn around?

Look at Steve Young. Young played for Tampa Bay for two seasons when they were a perennial joke of the NFL. He was 3-16 as a starter and was deemed a bust. Tampa Bay turned around and drafted Vinny Testaverde #1 overall. Bill Walsh and the 49ers came knocking and Tampa was more than happy to get a 2nd and 4th round pick for Young. Similarly, Clausen played for Carolina when they were right on par with those Tampa Bay teams that were hilariously bad. Carolina then drafted Cam Newton #1 overall...but Clausen stayed.

Once Young had an opportunity to sit and learn behind a legendary QB and head coach, he ended up becoming a HOF QB. Could the same thing happen to Jimmy, given a change of scenery? What if he was traded to say, New England? Ya'll might think I'm crazy...but what if? It's the offseason ya'll!

No.

Also, this may need to be reviewed by a mod for potential banishment from the Huddle. Using Steve Young!?! in a Clausen comparison?

Haha! You can compare the first couple years of Steve Young's career to Jimmy Clausen...because they are similar. They were both on terrible teams and performed terribly.

I'm just saying, Young was in an awful situation but was traded into a better one that revived a seemingly dead career. Could the same happen to Clausen?

not really....a team being bad doesn't = that QB was similar to Clausen.

Clausen is wired like David Carr....and there isn't an example of that being fixed.

and also, Clausen was NOT in a horrible situation.

Good OL, Good RBs, Good #1 WR, Good D.....THAT isn't horrible.

Fox also is great at minimizing what a QB has to do and letting him have success. Clasuen was just so bad he sabatoged it all.

I appreciate the bravery it took to start this thread hepcat. Clausen trashing is such a popular sport here.

I have a lot of respect for Clausen because the way he has handled himself. He has turned out to be a classy guy. (Not what was expected). He was thrown in to a terrible situation. I would like to see him get with a team, as Mr Scot said, with a WCO, and have a chance. A career as a number 2 is not a bad one. This was never the place for him. Hope he gets a chance somewhere and I hope he is successful.

Doesn't really matter...he has been getting paid far more than most here will make in a lifetime to sit on his azz.

Folks can crap on him all they like...but at the end of the day he ain't doing bad. Millions in the bank, a degree..and still young enough to leave/get booted out of the NFL and have some other type of career.

that I will agree, seems like a nice kid that was wrongly painted one way entering the league....he just can't play.

When the going gets tough guys show their colors. Clausen is an alright dude.

    • The only thing I said was he was part of the staff that made part of the decisions, and that I am judging the decisions made by that group as a whole. As assistant GM, you can pretty much guarantee his input held more sway than an intern or the guy that takes coffee requests. Fitterer didn't operate in a vacuum. Neither does Morgan now. While Fitterer did have the ultimate decision, to say that Dan had no input in ranking boards, evaluating FAs, trade offers or anything else would be asinine. We all know he did. Otherwise what the hell was his job as assistant GM? He wouldn't have been kept for 3 years if he was arguing every decision Scott ever made.    And the actual quote was "Morgan has done a bang up job in the draft and FA. Compared to what the last guy did, he is kicking ass and taking names." So is XL kicking ass and Brooks taking names from last years draft or did I get it backwards? We took Wallace over Payton Wilson because he was an injury risk after trading up for a RB with a torn ACL? Which one of the kicking ass and taking names was that?  Maybe we should review the thousands of gameday posts calling for XL to get off the field because he's a bust and can't catch a cold. We could review the posts about Brooks but... And Wilson. He's at 118 tackles this season vs 36 for Wallace.  I gave credit to Dan for a good draft this year. But I'm also not ignoring last year's draft either since he did that one after the last guy too.  That's not a strawman.
    • And then, in week 18, we can take Mayfield out of the game and whoop Bridgewater's @$$ for good measure! Let the former QB revenge train roll on!!
    • If we keep our guards in tact ($$$) and go with Mays at C, some OT depth would be nice. I think we should be happy about CB with Thornton's development (pre injury) and Smith Wade. I think Ransom is developing nicely, but I would like to see a FS type for situations. We suck at ILB and Edge (as a whole). We should be OK at RB.  I hope we sign Dowdle to a short contract. QB?  There are signs of hope and development.  (I don't like our backup QB) TE?  Good draft for TE, but I think we are developing with Evans, Sanders, and Tremble. WR?  A #2 with Coker and Horn in the slot.  XL?  What is that? We should be good in 2026. Morgan does more than draft.  Free agency has been strong too.  (Just emptying my brain on your comment--sorry)
