The panthers have visited only 10 WRs, 1 OG, 2 OTs, 2 DTs during the draft process.

I don't know if you're serious, but it may not be as crazy as it sounds.

Half way joking but wouldnt be surprised if it happened. IMHO though I feel we are going to trade down to the mid 20's and pick up a wr. No WR has enough value this year at 14 and if you grab one at 44 then we will miss out on the top 5 wr's.

It would be less crazy if we hadn't just signed Hixon. With Smith, Lafell and Hixon there is no need to take two wide receivers unless one is purely a special teams player (meaning it won't be in the second).

We are simply being prudent with the wide receiver position.

Smith - 1 or 2 great years left... been asking to be moved to the slot for a couple years now

LaFell - totally unproven still and not a lock for the #2 spot even

Hixon - injury history and unproven starter

Ginn - kick returner with ability to contribute to 4 wide sets

Gettis - see Hixon

Edwards - lol

Adams - frame is too small and game speed is too slow

Pilares - might surprise eventually, but injury concerns

We could definitely use solid first and second round talent...

The problem I have with that, though, is that I feel like our OL and DL needs more work than they're getting by spending the first two picks on WRs.

I say take Austin, Patterson, or another one of our top three if he is there at 14 or we can trade down into the mid 20s and still snag them, and go OL or DL in the second... those positions are much deeper talent-wise than the first crop of WRs.

Only way I take a WR in both the first and second is if we stick at 14 and take Austin, and then someone else in our top 3 falls to the second. The reason I say this is that, as big of an Austin fan as I am, I feel like he's more of an offensive weapon than a WR per se (even though I think he could be an instant upgrade over LaFell if we put him only at WR from day one) and we could use a bigger/bulkier possession WR to compliment him.

I am beginning to think that we take Tavon Austin flat out at 14 if he is still available, then turn around and trade him for another team's pick that would put us in a spot to draft one of the others (preferably D-Hop from the FO's perspective), or maybe we just make an agreement to trade Austin for certain teams if they agree to pick Hopkins (or Allen or Hunter), and their 3rd.

based on my hunches I believe this reveals that we will select defensive line in the first round with pick number 14. and select WR in the 2nd round. I believe a lot of wide receivers will fall due to the history of the position being one that takes 2-3 years to develop. I believe we added WR depth for next year to ensure the guy we draft will compete and learn from vets at his position.

I agree with those who say we are looking at receiver all over the first round as well as later rounds because we would be willing to trade down if we can find a buyer and want to do our due diligence. I really doubt that we will have the opportunity to trade down unless someone very special like Star would fall that far. But why would we pass on him ourselves just to pick up a fourth for example. I just don't think we go receiver at 14. I could see pulling the trigger if we trade down but just don't see which other team would want to do that at this point.

Now do a breakdown on our DT's, Cb's, OG, and Safeties on the roster and you can see either of these position could be 1st and 2nd round targets.

Not trying to attack you but I have more faith in the players we have at WR to step up then I do at the other position I listed.
