How early...

...would you be willing to draft an offensive lineman?

Conventional wisdom is our first rounder will likely be used on a defensive tackle, receiver, or safety. Those spots are popular picks among fans, and chances are if your favorite spot isn't what the first rounder goes for, you'll want it to be pick number two. With no third rounder (unless trades are made) the next spot is in the fourth round.

But how would you feel if the team used its second rounder on a Big Ugly; say, Barrett Jones out of Alabama for example?

If not then, are you good with the team waiting until round four or later to pick someone to play in the trenches (and protect Newton)?

I like big guys, they compete n stuff. I dont know how good Warmack is but its not a top ten pick so I couldnt complain but DT is a very pressing matter at the moment. If we get multiple "Big Uglies" I will be happy. I would really like to find a decent journeyman to slide in to SS but I wouldnt be surprised to see us go there also in the draft. Safety seems to be a position that you master after being in the league a couple of years.

Considering we didn't address our offensive line issues in free agency I would like to see us draft a guard or tackle in the first two rounds. I'm sure that we will add depth closer towards the season when players are cut, but I would like to find someone who can start for the next ten years.

I think you can't look at one position over another unless you have a good understanding of who you think will be there at each pick and how you judge who you have on your own team. For example, right tackle is a popular speculation about the O line. You have to look at who we have, Bell, Campbell and Williams and decide if you are okay with one of them or have to upgrade. then decide if there are guys in the fourth who would be clear upgrades. If so then maybe you go NT in the second and OT/G in the fourth. If you think that position is the most critical, and there would be no upgrades in the fourth or later, you have to pull the trigger in the second. If there is a run on NTs in the first then maybe you have to pull the trigger in the second. If there isn't then you can get the guy you want down the line.

So my answer would be I would be fine in the second or fourth or later if they were the BPA, were a definite upgrade and fit the type of guy we needed.

i am mostly just waiting to see how gettleman steers the ship in this draft. maybe he will depart from giants history of not drafting OL in the first 3 rounds in large part. it is so nice to imagine the guy with his finger on the button (so to speak) being able to confidently project draftees to the modern NFL by relying on a mountain of relevant experience in player evaluation.

    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
    • lol...I don't remember that.  Although recalling what I had for breakfast yesterday is sometimes a challenge.  Hope it was a positive thing.
