OK, I'm buying right now. Perhaps K.K. Short will be "long"

To be honest, I passed over Short while I was reading about all the top-tiered DTs once I read about his supposed on-off switch. I did not want a guy whose motor was questioned because: 1) his motor was questioned, and 2) I didn't want to hear the whining from the Huddle for the next few years about Short taking plays off. Lord knows there is still an underlying belief from a certain segment of Panthers fans that Pep took plays off (which is not exactly correct IMO, but that's a dead issue). Anyway, I read weeks before the draft that there were questions regarding Short's motor from some NFL scouts, and, indeed, a man who actually watches and analyzes NFL film, Greg Cosell, called Short "a frustrating player to watch" with a "glaring lack of consistent effort and execution." That being said, Rivera says that this is a product of Short being on the field too much. Indeed, Short was the Boilermakers D-line. Short was probably the best, most naturally gifted pass rushing DT in the draft by many accounts. He can get into the backfield. NFL.com's combine profile said basically that Short can as good as he wants to be. So, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt. As a fan I would have never thought of a player "taking plays off" because he's run into the ground, but that's what coaches and GMs are for. Hopefully the motor/stamina issue is a red herring that masked the real issue, which is not an issue at all, which leaves the Panthers with a potential pass-rushing beast at DT, and I can live with that.

Yea, I watched a number of the full game every snap videos on youtube, he's in on pretty much every defensive snap with two guys blocking him almost every play. I'm sure that would tire out even the highest motor guys.

From what I saw, the biggest legitimate "motor question" I have is that when the play got away from him, like a sweep or something that wasn't close, he wouldn't chase the play down. He'd just wind down and give up on the play. That's not the biggest issue in the world, but an issue nonetheless.

His run support is going to have to be coached up. He gets washed out of plays and basically gives up. Everyone doesn't have that pursuit gene, especially the hogmollies (Rivera's term :D ). I'm thinking that Star is that kinda guy.

    • I really appreciate Bill explaining his methodology here because that gives interested parties a chance to try and recreate the results themselves. I believe that it's safe to assume that despite emphasis being placed on WRs that Chuba Hubbard is one of the Panthers' top-5 weapons. Considering targets, yardage, receptions, etc... Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette are also on the list. Jalen Coker's success might have snuck him in there as well. I can't draw a conclusion on who #5 is though. I've narrowed it down to Diontae Johnson, David Moore, Ja'Tavion Sanders, and possibly Rico Dowdle if they're taking into account his production for the Cowboys in 2024.
    • Unfortunately business is business especially when there are large sums of money on the table. Goes the same for player and ownership. Does not make it right either way.  Why would he not want to play for the niners? Closer to home with a team that has a chance of delivering a SB trophy.
    • I don’t know if it’s him bad mouthing his former situation in public or my pettiness but either way I’m not a fan. Dude was on playoff teams getting paid millions to entertain. I’m not better that because and I am better than that. You don’t bad mouth your former employer in public. Esp after getting over paid and two, poor little Russian baby didn’t get the playing spot he wanted. Rod had him exactly where is was supposed to be.  He had a mean lip check and did defend our players. Specifically the devils game around Christmas where is our Haula on his ass. Cool. Thank you. But don’t talk poo about us. Because it make you look like Haula.    “need to get as far away as possible”. fug off. Didn’t see Burnsy bad mouthing and his play dropped off too.    sorry, but Orlov doesn’t get a pass from me. See you twice a year…
