Coming Years

Recommended Posts

Not sure about the rest of you, but I have to admit, I think some of the best years this franchise will ever have lie right in front of us. Fresh off the draft where we picked up Ngata 2.0 and Geno Atkins 2.0, we are moving in a positive direction! We have the 2011 ORoY and 2012 DRoY on our squad and all of next year's draft picks!

We are drafting well, under cap, have a monster front 7, a potential annual top 5 QB, and most importantly......we are young! Now, after looking at a few of the positives, we must point out the elephants in the room. As a fan I am excited due to the fact that Gettleman seems to be a fellow that views our upcoming issues as opportunities, not problems. Issues on deck for the coming years listed in no particular order:

1. Lack of number 1 WR (I feel this is our biggest problem in the 2014 draft! Nowhere else we can solve his problem other than the draft)

2. Paying the wrong people too much and salary distribution out of whack in general! We have Hardy, Cam, Luke, Star, and Short that will want their pay days! CJ making so much is going to make it hard to sign Hardy to a fair contract, too much invested in RBs makes it hard to pay Cam, etc. (IMO, this is the teams biggest problem and the part where Gman earns his money! Not sure how he gets it done, but I think as fans, our feeling may get hurt a time or two.)

3. The future need for a stud LT! (With Gross' contract expiring at the end of this year, I see him dipping into the 2014 FA pool to remedy this, then resigning Gross cheap and kicking him to the right side)

4. Weak secondary! (I really feel Gman will boost the secondary over the course of the next two years with FA's and 3rd and 4th rd picks!)

What do you guys foresee as our biggest problem in the next 4 years, not considering major injuries? What do you think the fanbase is over reacting to? Do you have faith that Gman can find that no. 1 WR next draft?

Problem is that needs change from year to year so what we think is a huge need today might not be if someone steps up and fills the need this year.  I think finding a number 1 receiver will continue to be a need.  But the secondary may or may not be a big need.  Munnerlyn was solid last year and we have 6 guys to fill 2 slots, the other corner and the nickel corner.  The same with safety.  Godfrey was solid at FS and we have a number of candidates at SS, one of which hopefully steps up.  We will have a need for a left tackle to replace Gross in a year or two.

Hard to say what happens though, this far ahead.

I honestly feel like we will be pleasantly surprised with our WR core play this year. I expect both Hixon and Lafell to step up and play a solid 2 & 3. I also think Cam's own progression will benefit them both.

Now that the DL issues have been addressed, we should have an awesome front seven. Couple that with the competition created in the secondary, and hopefully several of the young DB's will mature and gain confidence.

I know these two opinions lean towards positive outcomes, but I truly believe we have the potential to reach 10 or 11 wins this year.

So to answer the question, I agree that the OL and #1 WR positions should be our focus in the next couple of years. So far I have been pleased with Gettleman's decision making and am confident he will continue to move us forward with BPA in future drafts.

Preach it brother, preach it.

If you can't have faith and excitement this time of year? Well then, c'mon man.

Nagata 2.0 is a bit of a stretch. Nagata runs a 4.8-4.9 and is about 330. I hope he is in the same ballpark as nagata. If he can just stop the run as well as him we made a great pick.

The one main aspect of Star is his quickness. If you ain't ready, he's got you. Personally, I can't wait to see how long it takes for teams to start doubling him? The sooner the better, ah hellz, don't double him. I don't care. You can't double everyfugingone.

Maybe, just maybe, our back 7 will only have to cover 3-4 guys. We can damm near double everybody. Funny how that works for us, and against us. That doubling thing I mean.

It's definitely fun to think about this teams future... obviously there are some questions...

1. Back-Up QB (when Anderson calls it quits)

2. Back-Up TE (Hopefully Brandon Williams pans out)

3. Number One Wide Receiver (Steve Smith probably has two to three more years)

4. Left Tackle (Gross isn't getting any younger)

5. Offensive Line Depth (Garry Williams is one of our only capable back-ups)

6. Cornerback (We have great depth, but lack a shutdown corner)

7. Strong Safety (We really need to address this position next offseason)

8. Kicker (Hopefully Lineberry or Gay can be that guy)

9. Punter (It would nice if Nortman stepped up this year)

I know it seems like a long list, but a few of these (1, 2, 8, 9) could be solved by players already on the roster...

    • Lol, good one. Rod will never let Necas Play center
    • All I can say is... I have some happiness off the rags choking and losing to the Panthers. Hopefully the Western conference team wins the Stanley cup, but now I can be 100% uninvested in the playoffs
