If we're talking about guys who will consistently be receiving, we've got Smith, LaFell, Hixon, and Olsen

 

Looking at last year pretty much swap out Louis Murphy for Hixon.  

 

Beyond those guys, the next in line at TE or WR last season was Gary Barnidge with 6 receptions for 78 yards.  

 

With Ginn, Pilares, Edwards, and Adams, we've got a good battle for some roster spots and return specialist (also Barner, but he makes the team as RB3)

 

I have little expectations for Ginn.  They are about as high as Adams, Pilares, and Edwards.

Ginn has stone hands but he can contribute on ST and maybe make some plays as a receiver. I doubt it though.

Ginn wants to be a wide receiver.  He must have believed he had a chance here.  Hopefully he understands he has a lot of work to do to earn a spot.

 

Awesome if this is the right place for him and he makes it.  Hope he is coming in with the right mindset and effort.

IMO I think all he needs is an oppurtunity to play wr with a team on the rise. San Francisco did not give him that oppurtunity and he knows this is his last shot to be known for something other than his return game. Am I saying he will be the answer to our uncertain roster at WR no, but I do think he could be very useful to the team in multiple aspects. He will have Cam throwing to him so that is more of an arm than he's used to. If Ricky can help him with his hands he could be dangerous. 6 years is most likely to late to make major improvements to your game but I'm crossing my fingers.

 

 

I agree 6 years is a little late to make any major improvements, but Brandon Lloyd bounced around from team to team for years before he became what he is today. Sometimes it is really about the system a player is in, and/or the players that are around him which are the difference between being good and great.

He is only making somewhere around the veteran minimum, there are not a lot of other guys that I think we can sign for that money with as much possible upside.

I think six special team touchdowns would be a big stretch but it has to be better than having to put the Captain out there because he was the only one not scared of catching the ball.

#1 he is a return specialist.

#2 if he can take his corner up field Smith and LaFell will have a field day underneath.

He had less than 2 ST TDs in 4 out of 6 seasons. Why would you think that's his floor?

Not necessarily disagreeing but has Ginn played with a QB that is worth a poo or has the arm strength to really take advantage of his speed?

I think that adding to what you said, Ginn can serve a valuable role as a 3rd or 4th receiver. By taking the top off the defense it opens up underneath routes whether he make a bunch of catches or not.  He only needs to get a few long bombs from newton that he does catch to keep the free safety honest  deep. That makes it hard to double Smith allowing him to go nuts. If anyone can make Ginn a receiver, it is Proehl.  Like he did for Smith when he was still playing, he can pass along his knowledge about how to find holes in the defense as well as help Ginn run good routes.  Ginn doesn't need more than 30 catches if 1/3 of them go for TDs. Added to what he does as a returner, it will definitely justify picking him up.

I just think he's going to be re-energized in Carolina with more of a fresh start so to speak. I understand why you'd disagree with that but I really feel like he's going to be a game changer for our special teams.
