Jesus fuging Christ... here come the Monday morning QBs. The guy wasn't trained and he couldn't swim, but he did what he could and saved one those kids by doing it. Give the man his props. fug. If no one took action in a situation unless they were perfectly trained and experienced to deal of with the situation in a textbook manner then not much would ever actually get accomplished.

actually hundreds of people every year die doing the same thing which is stupidly try and rescue someone without a clue what to do. Especially when they cant swim well at all. The point of my post was not to critiicize but educate. You don't need textbook training to use your head and not make the situation worse by foolishly risking your own life when you could easily find a stick or formed a daisy chain with a few other folks to get to the kids. It is the same stupid attitude you exhibit which will makes bad situations worse. If no one took action three people could have died. So he took action and 3 people died. Tell me how that was better. Didn't he also leave a wife and 3 kids fatherless.

If you watch the video he actually didn't save anyone according to the sheriff. There were three kids in the water and one managed to get out on his own. It was that kid who yelled for help. He actually only jumped in to try and save the two other kids and they all drowned.

It was s heroic attempt and ultimately he gave his life trying to save someone else. A completely selfless act that should be remembered but the facts are still the facts.

no one was doing anything. better something was done than nothing to give those kids a chance at surviving.

 

i can't believe anyone would try and diminish the spirit of bravery he had in that moment. bravery and sacrifice overides common sense. you do something to save someone when no one else is regardless of the consequences or whether you are prepared or qualified and that makes you a hero. you do what you can to help just to give the ones in danger a chance.

 

it was a selfless act to help someone in need of saving when no one else was willing to help. true bravery and heroism.

I can't believe anyone is really knocking on this guy.  Safety advice, sure lets try to do it the right way if it happens in front of us is good, but the guy gave his life to try to save others.

I wish I could say it's surprising this thread got derailed in such a manner. Great job huddle.

It's quite easy to judge a man who lost his life while you sit in front of your damn computer.

My comment wasn't designed to criticize just inform. If you don't know what you are doing then sometimes you do more harm then good. If someone had gone in to save him then he put them at risk as well. You have to give him props for trying though. It takes guts to jump into water to save someone when you cant swim well yourself.

You can acknowledge bravery without encouraging someone that can't swim to jump into a dangerous situation. There was a story in Oklahoma a few years ago where a dozen or more people died in the Red River. One by one they went in to try and save each other and they all ended up dead. The best advice in my opinion is to learn how to swim and teach your children how to swim.

Couple summers ago, We were at Virginia Beach, my daughters were in the beginning of a rip tide.  Started to pull them out. Without hesitation I went into the water to get them.  Ended up helping 4 children get in. The fear on their faces strips you of "What do I do now?"  You simply react.  Fortunately for me the riptide wasn't strong enough to pull me but the children could have perished. 

 

I can only see he reacted because of the look on their faces.  SAVE ME.  It is a vision I will never forget those looks on their faces.  I am certain he saw the same thing.  You react, you don't think.

 

I beat 4 lifeguards to them.  Adrenline for sure helped me.
