So in short, a player protests a call to the referee, referee takes a punch from the player. Referee stabs the player with a knife (who carries a knife while refereeing?). Player dies and the family of the player storms the pitch and mutilates/decapitates the referee.

 

Some places just ain't right.

Well, in England there are fan gangs who roam the streets before matches and this particular story took place in Brazil, one of the soccer capitals of the world and is certainly not considered a developing country.

FYI, brazil is a very developing country. Most of people in brazil are very poor. I got relatives from brazil, I know.

England does have hooligans, not gangs. It usually more peaceful than football games. I'm a die hard Arsenal fan and I follow English premier league very close and I never heard of any big fights or deaths.

I can't recall any incidents of murder, but there have been some close calls in US sports history, especially turn of the century baseball.  Babe Ruth once chased a fan thru the stadium with a baseball bat. Had he caught him, well that might not have gone well.  And the name Ty Cobb appears in several incidents, including one where he ran into the stands and assaulted a handicapped fan. 

 

Fwiw, it will not surprise me if a player is assaulted in college sports with all the rushing the court or field that goes on.  I expect it to happen eventually.

The socio-economic status of a country's residents is not the lone determining factor in rating it's status among world economies. There are a lot of poor people in this country and that number grows daily. Brazil has the 8th largest economy in the world and also has one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

 

But some still classify Brazil as "developing" alongside China, Russia and India. Just a difference of opinion.
