Deangelo has that look in the eye. See Jonathan Jones' latest.

According to Cam Newton, Deangelo has that look in his eye. This, per Jonothan Jones' new profile on the man that Yahoo Sports' Brad Evans refers to as Little Napoleon.

It took Cam Newton just one practice to see the look in Williams’ eyes, one the quarterback said he had never seen from the running back before.

“He has that look in his eye like it’s now or never,” Newton said. “It’s not panicked. It’s an intensity. He’s like the time is now for us. I know that is what you need as a team, from a leader.”

Just the thought of D-Will over the last couple of seasons (the last three, really) takes my mind on a roller ride of emotions.  I love the guy. Out of two Panthers jerseys that I have, #34 is one of them. But that didn't make me think that he was necessarily in the best situation from a fan, team and player perspective actually. In other words, I thought that he was overpaid and would be best served going to some place like Green Bay. But Williams obviously loves it here in Carolina, and took a pay cut in order to stay. And the fact is that he was far from done, as can be attested to from last season after coming off the pine.

Williams got his job back when Stewart went on injured reserve with a sprained ankle in Week 12. In the final five games of the season, Williams racked up 445 rushing yards, 140 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

But the good thing about Williams is that he was basically always the professional on and off the field.

“I was a little bit upset, well not necessarily upset, it bothered me a little bit that I didn’t get the opportunities that I thought I should have gotten,” said Williams, who added his demotion wasn’t the cause of his frustration. “That lasted for one game because as a team player you can’t feel like that. If this is what it takes to win games, then this is what I’m willing to do.”

Reminiscent of the Kuechly-Beason situation---in a way---the Stewart-Williams situation was a teaching moment for coach Rivera. Lesson learned? You can't keep a good man down. Sometimes it may take life's situations to teach you this, but it is hopefully a lesson well learned by Chico.

One thing about the whole situation though is that D-will is probably just as motivated as he ever was, and he believes that our offensive philosophy will become a little bit more ol' school than has been displayed the last couple of years, and he appears to be ready to resume his role. Not necessarily the role of the highly professional team player that does what it takes to win, even sitting on the bench, but his role as the Alpha running back on offense.

“It’s kind of one of those things where I’m not going to scream it out and yell that I want the ball. I’m going to do it with my actions.”

Nice to hear, isn't it?

Its a nice feel good read, but.... This team doesn't do itself any favors anymore by talking themselves up in camp and preseason.

Produce on game days and win games. No talking required. That is the only way to win back the fan base.

i fight not to get caught up in the preseason hype this year, esp. when the players are talking like this. I've just seen too much talk before and after...talk before about how much better things are going to be this year and then talk after in the form of excuses and comments like "rome wasn't built in a day".

talking is fine, but i want results. this year the wins HAVE to come.

The thing that bothers me is that you can hear the desperation in their interviews and quotes.  Just win...just win.  That's the mantra of this team.  You really don't hear confident teams saying things like this.

It sounds like the little engine that could saying "i think I can, I think I can" over and over.

TBH I think this is a reflection of the coach, and I think this is his motto that he has instilled onto the players.  Rivera has no clue "how" to win, or what to do to win, that's why he keeps telling players "its time to win...we have to start winning....just win"

The more you say something doesn't get you any closer to your goal.  As much as I hate to admit it, you would never see this kind of talk on a John Fox football team.

I just want the RBs to get the ball more then they did last year, because the first half of the season was a joke with how the team used them in games. They have to get into a rhythm and know the flow of the game but they can't do that if their not getting the touches.

I don't understand the "the time to win is now" mantra that Gettleman and Rivera are instilling, with the OL, WR, and DB situation being what it is. I still think we are a year away. Having said that, I think we are one good draft and a few F.A. acquisitions from being one of the more complete teams in the NFL. I thinks Gettleman is building this team to be good for a long time, which is why I don't understand the urgency this season.

Of course this is true, but we're in the middle of summer. I'm sure "fluff" pieces are being generated out of every camp. Considering all the struggles and strife we've all lived through since 2008 its no wonder we see players trying to exude confidence and determination. The ebb and flow of franchises will put every team into periods of sub-par performance. We all want this latest period to end. The journalism pieces will always hit that angle and the writers will ask questions and craft pieces to reflect that.

That bothers me a bit too as when you start focusing on winning so much that if you don't win, it's very deflating...

All this talk is really premature...  but it can have a mental effect on them.
