The Numbers Game.

Simply how do you see the numbers breaking down right now?

QB - 3

RB - 3

FB - 2

WR - 6

TE - 3

Oline - 9

Dline - 9

LB - 6

CB - 5

Safety - 4

Kicker - 1

Punter - 1

and JJ

I can see only keeping 2 QB's on the roster  and maybe 8 olinmen But most everything else seem solid.

Who they  think they can stash on the Practice Squad could have a effect also.

I need to know everyone's salary to make an educated guess. Right now, only the top 51 salaries are counting toward the cap. On final cuts day, we have to count all 53 against the cap.

That'll be the tiebreaker between players that haven't separated from the others. The trick of keeping players we like for next year by putting them on IR may not be used as much this year, either. Players on IR also count toward the cap, so Gettleman may just outright release players instead of IRing them.

It's going to be a balancing act between most ability and least cap figure.

I think we go 8 Dline

New normally have carried 9 DL.

I would think that the staff would like to carry a 5th DE if one if the young guys flash. I say this because we often slide CJ and Hardy inside on passing downs.

But, of course, this is just speculation.

I think the 4 DE's (Hardy, CJ, Alexsander , and Addison) and the 4 DT's (Edwards, Cole, Star, KK) are locks. JMo they are either going to carry 1 more DT or DE.

has anyone heard or seen much from colin cole in camp? it'd be great if he was a solid rotation piece

Yes and no.

For example, there's a thing called the veteran minimum salary benefit. Check this out from a recent article re: Eric Wright's contract:

When a player is signed for the veteran minimum, there is something called the veteran minimum salary benefit. This gives teams a salary cap credit between the signed salary, and the base salary of a two-year veteran's salary of $555,000. The 49ers signed Kassim Osgood to a one-year veteran's minimum contract of $940,000, and Lavelle Hawkins to a one-year veteran's minimum contract of $715,000. For the purposes of the salary cap, their contracts only count $555,000 against the cap, with the rest being charged to "Player Benefits". The team can also pay out bonus compensation up to $65,000 on top of the deal.

Granted, if they make even $1 over vet minimum, the whole salary counts against the cap (as was the case with Wright who signed for $750,001)

But of those fringe players who will be in discussion for the final few roster spots, how many of them are going to be making enough to have a serious impact on the cap? And we're not exactly strapped for space this year. I'm betting salary comes less into play here than you think. Are you willing to sacrifice pure talent or upside to save $200k?

    • Not totally inaccurate, haha Except that kid wasn't as excited as I was.  I was yelling louder, and more, and running around the room in circles until I almost passed out from exhausting and was trying to catch my breath for a good 10 minutes because I'm way too old to be doing that, LOLOL Oh, and I tweaked a muscle in my shoulder from all the punching the air I was doing too. For as awesome as that pick was for me, it really screwed me up for a few days between my shoulder and lost voice (Wrexham securing back-to-back-to-back promotions Saturday afternoon contributed to that though too).
    • Getting Pierce jr isn’t forfeiting the pick they just had 2 1sts this year.
    • Full disclosure and the real reason.... I'll be seeing my Nephew in basically one month from today, and while I've gotten him stuff from my other teams the past year, I hadn't been willing to saddle him with Panthers stuff yet, that's now changed lol. So if the jersey would get to me before I see him, I'd get that and him his first Panthers onesie/shirt so I can get a picture of us together in them. If it wouldn't get to me by then, I'd just wait to get the one I prefer.  So yea, my rush is really just about trying to get a picture of myself in it with my Nephew in Panthers gear too.
