Why were there no designed roll outs for cam?

I said it before and I'll say it again. Rivera needs to go back and look at how the Failcons utilized a young Mike Vick in Atlanta.

Cam would be much deadlier running in open space (roll-outs) than compared to the ridiculous read-option where he has to make something out of nothing.

I have thought that Cam should be rolling more also, and I remember last year a announcer stated this during a game. I dont know what it is...maybe its his stride or he does not have to rely on the O-line that much. The read option was cool at first but I actually prefer to see Cam playing under center.

I really don't know who's to blame. Is it Cam? Is there something we don't know about him being able to be a consistent drop back quarterback? Is this why Rivera and Chud placed the read option to benefit Cam? Or is it that Rivera and Chud are just two dumb@ss who can't utilizes the talent of this kid?

I would be shocked if Cam is not bootlegging his ass off during the regular season. Pickles bootlegged on his 1st play I think. Hopefully with the threat of Cam rolling out that might help the running game out a tad.

I'd be shocked if he wasn't bootlegging his ass off during the regular season because he's playing behind an OL that couldn't block me.

He'll probably have a better chance of surviving that way...

We have won 2 games in 3 without giving the rest of the league any film on:

certain protection packages

2 TE sets

goal line sets

screens (there were a few)

roll outs and bootlegs

run-option

tosses and sweeps

runs outside the tackles, etc...

We also haven't practiced these against real competition in game situations:

certain protection packages

2 TE sets

goal line sets

screens (there were a few)

roll outs and bootlegs

run-option

tosses and sweeps

runs outside the tackles, etc...

and that concerns me. It has attributed to our slow starts for the regular season. This team has never been the kind where you could just flip a switch and the offense becomes instantly dazzling good, most teams aren't. I understand the philosophy but I don't necessarily agree with it. At least I haven't seen any looks of surprise on Cam's face like there were last year in preseason.

After thinking about the game, I realize that last night was all about the O-line and I see no passing grades there. It seemed, too, that Gross & Kalil were told, no heroics, let the youngsters rise or fall on their own play. Ouch.

What did lift my spirits was that Cam came back in the game after getting bruised.  It was good to see, even if it was just a preseason game.  And I thought I picked up that our wr's and te redoubled their efforts after those dropped balls.  And we did not cough up the ball like we had.

I can't wait for the Seattle game.

I don't care if they run a high school triple option, do something impressive!

They have managed to make Barner look awful, a guy who just had a 1700 yard season. I almost cried when I saw Reggie Bush highlights from last night.

This better be the best decoy job since WW2 when they put a dead pilot somewhere off the coast of France with fake secret plans for the invasion of Europe effectively putting German reserves in the wrong areas.

Look at this way.  Baltimore pulled out all of the stops.  They showed different sets and route combinations.  We shut it down.  Now people have film of those plays and how to stop them.  All people know about us is that we run up the middle coupled with some go routes.  We run some zone on defense and don't hardly ever blitz.  Which is going to be harder to gameplan against week 1?  We could be out there running double reverse passes for you, but I like this better.

Part of me thinks you are right, and part of me thinks you are giving Shula way too much credit.

Rivera sat back while Chud played games with the offense and it almost cost him his job.  He won't do the same thing with Shula.  After seeing what the defense did he will focusing on the offense for the next 2 weeks and likely asking Gettleman for some o-line help. He surely can't be sitting back there complacent with what we have done to this point.  He knows a slow offensive start will doom this team and his career here.  I bet he and Shula have already met a few times this morning.

I'm not saying we would do a better job, but it may be worth pointing out that Shula was the only guy interviewed who would accept a one year deal.

Both of the other candidates said they wanted the job before it was offered to Shula.  You have no idea what was offered or what was said so don't act like you were there.  Shula was under contract already so no additional deal had to be made but that was not a factor in the decision according to anyone who has reported on the particulars.

We practice every day.  College teams never play preseason games and do fine, no reason to think professionals can't perfect stuff in practice.

There is no way in hell you should be running read option, bootlegs, or many screens in the preseason with your starting QB.  Protecting our QB is more important than fan gratification of preseason glory on offense

Are you kidding me, he probably gave his first class ticket to McDermott, so he could sit next to Shula in coach on the flight back.

Yas reported that Jackson balked at only being offered a one year deal.  So yeah, I assumed he was offered something, but I didn't realize that Shula is still working under his QB Coach contract until I read your post.

I guess it makes good financial sense then, huh?
