“I’m not quite sure what the real, true benefit is other than having a few more plays,” Rivera said, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “People say, ‘Well, you get 75, 80 plays going faster.’ You also can go 1-2-3 and out faster and put the other team back on the field faster. So which is it? . . .

“There’s some stretches if you go out there and you go too fast and make a mistake, and all of a sudden your defense is back out there. Now your defense is getting worn down. Is that a good thing, too?”

Sounds to me like Rivera is planning on playing a LOT of low-scoring games this year.

There isn't a right or wrong answer to this. In college it is a little different where there can be big differences in talent. If you have more talent or explosiveness on offense, the more plays you run the better the chances of you winning.

In the NFL it is all about efficiency. The talent difference isn't as pronounced. If you have legendary QBs like Brady and Manning it does make sense to play faster. Otherwise I don't think you gain or lose much by going fast.

I don't want us to play as fast as Philly, but I just would like to pick up the pace a little to have more time to diagnos a defense presnap and not waste timeouts due to the play clock.

There is no point in getting to the LOS early unless we are actually going to see how the D lines up and audible out of it. So we call our play....and run it.

Buffalo played fast and had 14 points in 14 possessions. We played slower and had 7 points in 7 possessions.

They didn't play better just because they had 14 points.

He's right. Chip Kelly will be at Tennessee or Texas in a few years. His gimmick won't last in the NFL.

Although they don't run it quite as fast as Philly, Denver runs a very similar tempo on offense.

So did NE last year.

Mark my words, there will be dissent in the Philly locker room at about the halfway point of this season.

Everyone can crown Kelly all they want because of a week one win.  That type of offense is not sustainable over a season.  Hell, they couldn't even sustain it for an entire game.  Grown men that are multimillionaires won't listen the same way 19 year old kids do.

In his particular case, Ron is right.

why did we only have 3 possessions in the second half? i'm sure it had absolutely nothing to do with the amount of time we took between each snap.

Couldn't agree more.

Its counter-intuitive, but IMO if you have a great defense (which I think we do now), then that gives you MORE reason to be aggressive on offense if you have decent offensive players (and we do, including a double-threat franchise QB).

The attitude of "I have a great defense, so why should I take any chances or risks?" is the attitude of a loser.
