The final FG

After 3rd down my brother and I both said immediately "go for it."  Rivera did not, we lost.  Of course, nobody can really fault him for it.  Most nobody, at least not someone who reached HC in the NFL would have gone for the win there.  My question is, who here would have?  With our track record in close games, I would have in a heart beat.  Get beat trying to win dammit.

I understand why 95% of people would not have and also why Rivera did not.  Rivera coahces by the book, but as with many cases, I feel the book is wrong.  Winning by 1-2, of course, kick the FG so a FG does not beat you.  Winning by three, with Cam at QB, I am going for the win.

This is not something I am critical of Rivera over (there are plenty of other reasons) because even Belicheck would likely have kicked a FG, but I would love to have a coach that would take a chance from time to time.

To me it wasn't so much the field goal, I probably would have kicked it to. What pissed me off was running it up the gut on third and 5 against a stacked box. They had a timeout, so they were going to stop the clock anyways. Throw the ball and try and pick up a first. They were playing for a field goal the whole time (aka trying not to lose)

A good head coach has to take the entire game into context and apply an appropriate course of action when dealt with a situation like that one.

Our secondary was depleted (on top of being 2nd rate), the Bills offense had shown signs that it was capable of taking it down the field for a score, and our offense was driving it pretty good on the ground prior to the 4th and 1.

Consider all those things and you should ignore what the book says. Go for it...because being up by 6 with 1:30 left is no guarantee anymore.

    • Doubling tripling and quadrupling down on this subject in defense of the pick is reminiscent of a certain mindset that has overtaken the political world. This conversation will become less contentious and dragged out to the point of becoming a dead beaten horse if rational minds can simply agree that we made a mistake missed on a potential franchise center and we will learn from it. All this coping is unnecessary.
    • Here in lies the rub that the supporting posters continue to ignore. He wasn’t a 2nd round pick in the 2025 class, especially with an ACL tear. It was a dumb pick for any GM who looks ahead to determine values. C and CB were much better values than an injured RB in 2024. If a RB isn’t even playing much in 2024, you have to compare him to 2025. We’re beating a dead horse but only because the defense of the pick is almost comical at this point. We’ve made a ton of poo picks and moves/non trades while Morgan was GM and the assistant GM. It happens, we don’t have to jump through hoops to act like we just had some really bad luck. The 2025 draft class is unknown so far but damn it felt way better afterwards for the first time in a long time. Embrace the potential and stop stamping guaranteed on the box of poo of the 2018-2024 drafts. We are were we aware because of them and 2025 has to hit so we can get past the 7 win max in 7 year hurdle. Also, “flashed his talent” isn’t 9 carries for 22 yards. His one reception for 18 yards isn’t a flash with 11 other touches for 27 yards. He hasn’t proven anything. We have no idea if he’ll contribute in 2026.
    • Oh for those tired of the Mannings I have bad news, Peytons son Marshal already has college teams after him and he isn't even in HS until this fall...   I'd wager we have two Mannings in the NFL in 2030
