Rivera doesnt push them and is very passive. Just look at the play on Sundays, this team is just so sloppy and fails the eye test. Our team just looks so slow out there. Its as if they had a huge meal right before the game and are ready for a food coma. No intensity or passion.

Think about it. At your job or last jobs, if you liked your boss what was the reason? I dont know about you guys but when I liked my past bosses I worked for it was because I knew I could get away with poo and have no worries. Name one time in your life you went out of your way to praise your boss and say you liked him when he was a hard ass disciplinarian. Yea thats what I thought.

Infact, the way the players like Rivera so much is troubling. Its because hes a passive push over and they dont want a real HC to instill real discipline in this team. When we fire Rivera and the players whine and moan, fug em. They can leave with him or retire. Simple and plain.

I've been saying it since last season...

Zod even mentioned how Rivera's first camp was the most laid back camp he'd ever seen.

I equate Rivera to a substitute teacher. Everyone loves it when they have the substitute teacher in class, because they're more likely to either not know the routine or at the very least they're more likely to put up with your crap... they know they can get over on Rivera.

Look at how long guys like Nakamura and now someone like Armond Smith stick around.

Even more telling is how I've mentioned multiple times now over the last few weeks that the players basically said Rivera should've been fired instead of Hurney last season. But, after we racked up those all important morale-boosting meaningless wins, all was forgiven and forgotten. The dude is a joke and the players know it.

All theory.  I have the best boss I've ever had, and I like him more than any boss I've ever had. And, guess what? I will work for him harder than any boss I've ever had.  You don't have to be a prick to lead someone. Productivity actually increases when you have happy employess, not when you make everyone miserable. You let them know what the rules and expectations are, and carry on from there.  I have seen it time and time again.

 

I have a hard time believing that players like Rivera because he is some type of pushover. To me, his failings are more about lack of management and personnel decisions than anything else (which also speaks to Gettleman and Richardson's decision making as well).

The players respect Rivera b/c he has been there and done that.  People can question (and rightfully so) Rivera's game management, but you can't question him as a man.

 

The difference between winning and losing is small in the NFL.  Some coaches talk the talk but have never been in the players shoes.  That only works when you're winning.

 

Rivera will continue to have a successful NFL career after this as a DC.  And I wish him well.  It's too bad his tenure here was a failure, but I don't dislike him.

 

Just time to move in another direction.  Overall, it doesn't work out for most coaches.  That's why most of them get fired.

It's hard not to agree with this theory. He seems to inexplicably reserve all his "tough love" for a few players (e.g., Adams, Gettis). Everybody else seems to get the "It's OK; you're the little brother learning how to punch back" treatment. From the outside looking in, I do get the feeling that playing for Carolina is comfy.

 

Frankly, though, I'd get sick to my stomach at this point if I saw Ron Rivera chewing someone out for not performing well at their job.

Thats total bs. By all accounts he is one of the toughest and aggressive coaches behind close doors. Just because you don't see him blowing up on tv doesn't mean he is soft. Quit acting like you know anything about him

      Yeah I find myself flipping between the worst case scenario of Bryce either playing just mediocre enough for our decision makers to justify giving him a contract extension in their eyes because they want to justify drafting him. Or Bryce going back to playing poorly and us having no one else to fall back on because Pickett might be decent for one or two games but there's no one else and our locker room starts to get ugly because we went all in with our salary cap and guys careers are on the line. This scenario which IMO is the higher probability given our schedule and the amount of tape out there on Bryce is why I say if we can trade down and acquire a few more mid or late round picks we should draft a developmental QB. Not looking for a guy to be the savior but someone with the necessary physical tools and who could actually run a QB sneak. But we'll just have to see how it shakes out. I just want a competitive team but the last thing I want is the season to fall apart because we once again threw our arms up in regards to the QB room.

      ^This. Rico was dynamite when we needed it last season, but not enough to keep but it massively upped his earning potential. It was a win-win for both sides. And he was there to cover the hole left by the injury to another RB, and hopefully his release to free agency means there's good news for us on the way. These new ones give us the opportunity to do that again, on the offensive line and elsewhere. We've got some long term question marks here and there due to injuries and age, and these players have a chance to up their value on the open market or settle down with us if the opportunity arises. And none of it ties us down with dead money down the road if it doesn't work out. And we've been in dead money hell for a decade now. Lease the ones you like, buy if you fall in love.
