Did the Panthers hire the wrong guy?

After doing some researching for head coaching related threads in early 2011, I was reminded that the only guys we sought contact with were Greg Manusky, Perry Fewell, Rob Ryan, and of course, ol' tree face Ron. All NFL defensive coordinators. Worst part is Ron probably was the best candidate out of all of them. In January the next time we look for a head coach, I hope JR doesn't order the same lame, narrow-minded approach, because being stubbornly closed-minded in thinking only NFL DCs can lead you to success didn't work then. So the answer to that question is no, we probably didn't hire the wrong guy, and that's the sad part, because Jerry's so out of touch with what's working in the NFL he probably doesn't even know 3/4ths of the names of other prominent HC candidates that aren't DCs.

Oh and here's a sample of my state of mind after hiring Ron at the time:

i like our coaching personnel better than i like SF's

in fairness to yourself i think everyone thought we had a great line up of coaches at the time, especially defensively.

Rivera had led some great D's, McDermott was a bright young prodigy and is the only one who hasn't bombed his career here, and Meeks had done alright coordinating given the talent level on our D the past season and was now the Secondary coach. Chud had worked with a good offense in SD.

But it's just more evidence for Jerry that assembling defensive coaches is not some awesome secret success recipe

    • It was at some point his rookie season…really, when Frank had to give him that “break” 3 games in and for Dalton to play vs Seattle.  While it was obvious he lacked the tools….i still contend that was peak between the ears of Bryce on top lacking the physical tools
    • Fair. But I do agree with him, likely AT catches at least one if not both of those balls. For a couple of reasons, probably get better separation, averaged 3 yds in 2024 and 2.9 yds in 2023 versus the 1.79 yds in the game today for Hunter. Additionally, AT is a physically far larger and has a significant catch radius advantage over Renfrow.  That's not to say that Bryce still didn't miss those throws but those bigger guys do help alleviate some of those mistakes just because of those type of advantages. You said yourself, we are having him basically attempt to be an AT clone when he just simply isn’t.
    • You can’t be serious rn. Yes the receivers let him down, did you even watch the game? Bryce played horrible, the WRs outside of TMac played horrible, the LBs player horrible, coaching was horrible. The difference between me and you is you want to pin everything on one player. EVERYTHING. IS. BAD.
