blaming the generals

back in the day when there were wars against western nations, the defeated nation would typically head home with their tail between their legs and everyone would blame the leadership for the poor performance. It was easier to imagine that their soldiers (typically theirs sons etc) were just as good as those fuging prussian pigs, or those papist french, or the godless british sailors, or whatever; they just had a few jews or whatever that had snuck into the upper echelons and fuged it up.

better leaders and we're just as good as the rest of them! next war!

well, sometimes the soldiers just aren't that good. italian soldiers weren't defeated by ethiopia because of bad leadership. the americans didn't get routed by canada because they didn't have good generals. sometimes your soldiers just fuging blow....

....even your favorite one.

It's easy as fans to pin everything on the coaching staff, because it's easier to fire 10 dudes than replace 30.

It's easy to blame the lack of development and, dare I say regression, of a certain favorite player, on the bad coaching, other elements, weather, commercial shooting schedule, etc.

sometimes the british send a bunch of inbred australians over the barricades into machine gun fire. sometimes the soldiers just can't cut it against starving koreans/vietnamese.

Alex Smith, RG3 and Eli all have 5TDs. One of these teams are 3-0 and the rest are 0-2. I think it's safe to say that because Alex Smith's team has more wins, he is better than those two.

How about this, Russell Wilson has 2 TDs so far compared to Cam and Kaep both with 3TD. Shehawks are 2-0, Panthers 0-2 and Kaep 1-1. Similar production levels but different TEAM results.

I think luck is just as big a factor as strategy in Risk. Damn dice!

Luck is an extremely critical aspect in the game of football and nobody likes to think about it because you just can't strategize for the bounce of the ball.

Case in point: DeAngelo's fumble came about because he spun around just in time for Chancellor to have a good angle at hitting ball out. If he had simply fell to the ground rather than turning back towards the field he'd be down, we'd keep the ball and likely score.

Against Buffalo, Luke reaches out and taps Stevie Johnson as he runs by, likely on reflex alone. The ref calls an incorrect pass interference call instead of defensive holding and it negates the game-clinching interception.

Football is probably one of the most luck-influenced sports in the entire world. And it sucks that our luck has been pure shite.

"Alright men see that machine gun nest over there. I want you all to take these sticks and rocks and charge it head on. One of you are bound to make it through and take out the gunner."

"But sir shouldn't we attempt to flank it or call in an air strike."

"Nonsense private, I like our odds and last time I checked I give the orders around here."

The squad follows their orders and proceeds to get slaughtered by machine gun fire.

If your leader is terrible and doesn't know basic tactics the best soldiers out there are going to be worthless because they are trained to take orders from their superiors.

Damn right. I'm not one to believe in "bad luck" or "curses" but I do know we lost, what like 16 straight coin tosses?

Unreal. Maybe we do have black cat syndrome.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
