we can't overpay.  the dude is good but we already have the personnel it would take to replicate his production rather easily.  i want him back but we have to know cam and luke are gonna want huge deals soon too and they matter way more.

We do???

yup.  hardy is gonna have about 12 sacks per year.  frank alexander would would have 7-8 per year as a starter imo.  then we'd just need to find a pretty good backup behind alexander that could be a decent rotation guy and just churn out 3-4 sacks per year.  kinda like how antwan applewhite was.  i want hardy back because i love his attitude and swagger, we need guys like that but if he's asking for too much don't overpay.  he's not THAT great, he's not even the best DE on our team

You realize it's not just sack production, right? There's also the constant double teams, sealing the edge against the run, tackles, tackles for loss, QB hits, pressures, batted balls, intimidation factor, future potential, etc.

And that sir is the issue in a nutshell. Regardless of what we or DG thinks he's worth fiscally, his real worth will have to be factored as an opportunity cost.

Will DG risk losing Cam or Luke by signing Hardy to a huge contract? I don't think so. Cam and his development is the key to this team's future as an elite franchise.

I'm sure Gettleman has a max figure he's willing to pay Hardy, and unlike Hurney, I don't think he will go above that figure.  So I would guess that right now Hardy's people are still above that figure, so Gettleman's still working on bringing it down.  I'm sure Hardy will get some considerations for lowering his asking price, though.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I bet DG finds a way to pull it off. I see us keeping Hardy, Cam, AND Keek. Gettlemagic, boys, Gettlemagic!

it's not magic to max out your cap space on 3 guys, any idiot can do that. 3 guys that we have a losing record under mind you. if he can keep all 3 at reasonable contracts and leave enough cap space to build a quality roster and winning team around them then I'll say that's magic

gettleman doesn't strike me as the type to throw a record breaking contract just to keep one guy. quite the opposite actually. we'll see what happens with hardy, sounds like he'll be looking to get every penny possible (i'm guessing franchise tag this offseason and him walking after that)

Seems to me Alexander has motivation issues...there was a reason why he was a healthy scratch two weeks ago(think it is more then the punches thrown fiasco). He had the stigma of having an on / off motor coming out of college. Unless he starts to show that he wants to play every down, then I would not feel comfortable with him as a starting DE.

You got to remember that Hardy might not be as good as big money, he's more valuable due to his versatility.  He's big and strong enough to play inside allowing us to put him, CJ and alexander in on passing downs.  He's also a great special teams gunner.  I think hardy is worth 10ish mil a year assuming he keeps his production around where it should be.

Looks like you're right. Alexander is good, except the coaching staff makes him inactive.....

    • I have started doing my research on these draft picks and I like this guy. But I'm am iffy on taking a TE in the first if isnt a flat out generational guy more importantly on this team where it's questionable we get the necessary impact out of him. I say if a top defensive guy at their position falls to 19th you jump on it and push this defense to an elite unit. The offense will do their part.
    • fans view “box safety” with the same disdain they have when they hear “game manager” QB. but there’s a reason most 1st round safeties are “box safeties”-it’s a much longer list of requisite skills to be a good box safety than it is to be a guy whose only real responsibility is to not get beat over the top. Fans crave the ed reed type and as someone who has never been able to enjoy this franchise having a guy like that, I get the enthusiasm-but I’m not really prepared to spend a first round pick on a free safety. If it happens it’ll be fun, it’ll address a need with a good player and that’s well and good. But those guys end up walking after their first contract because their pedigree usually outpaces what their teams feel like they’re adding to their overall win total.
    • Its criminal that the upcoming season is mainly in the tiny hands of BY.  I still member the time I did a full turn, if you member his first off-season from that Panthers all-time worst team....... Answering questions at his first presser, he goes along the lines " I didn't do nothing, no weight room or throwing" " I needed to get away". I was fully out with him, the guy didn't even try to improve his football mind, body, strength, in the biggest joke of panther football. I could not believe it, what a leader or dare say "point guard"(lols @ NBA point guards as a ref)
