Do we have the worst coaching staff in the league?

Let's look at some of the teams towards the bottom of the league right now solely from a coaching perspective:

 

NY Giants -- Seemingly in typical Giants mode but floundering more than usual.  Coughlin and his Crew are proven with 2 rings.  I think this is more of an impending end-of-an-era's-squad type deal.  The core from their runs is not really there anymore.  

 

Jags -- I actually think Gus Bradley is a solid coach.  Great defensive mind but also has good tenacity and instinct.  This is a situation where the talent is SEVERELY lacking on the team and it's the staff's first season.  Too early to know.  

 

Bucs -- alright, this is a case of a bad coach and a bad QB situation.  This may be a coaching ordeal I identify worse than ours. But they do have Glennon as their starter lol.  

 

Skins -- It's the Shanahans...

 

Steelers -- Tomlin is a fine coach.  This is a situation where I don't think they brought in the right players at the right time.  Talent is sure as hell there at the skills positions but they have serious problems in the trenches.  

 

Texans -- Kubiak is a strong offensive minded and an average HC.  I think of him as a mini-Shanahan with half the crew from the late 90s/early 00s Broncos.

 

Raiders -- I may be in a minority but I like Dennis Allen and I like what I've been seeing.  It's a solid squad that allow Pryor to have moderate success in.  

 

 

...and now we get to the battle of the stoic-former-80s-bears-players-turned-"player's" coaches: Rivera v. Frazier

 

I think this upcoming game bottom line is going to highlight the worst coaching in the league.  I love the Panthers to death but I honestly think we have the absolute worst coaching staff in the league.  That's the biggest issue at the end of the day.  Good coaching gets wins.  Everything from the offensive/defensive style, to the playbook, to the tutelage, to the play-calling, to discipline, to execution, to the demeanor, to the whole freaking mood of the team.  

 

If we don't get through this game, I think it leaves the most telling mark on this coaching staff.  We are facing a one-dimensional offense with a QB situation up in the air, albeit one of the greatest RBs of this generation but that's about it.  Solid but not stout defense.

 

I'm just saying if this game does not go in our favor, it is completely safe to say (if not already) that we've got a new coaching staff next year.  

 

We have a stretch of Falcons-49ers-Patriots-Dolphins upcoming.  Not to mention 2 Saints and another Falcons game to close out the year.  

 

so I'll throw this out there....Do you think this staff has the ability to pull this team out of the rut or are you done with them (or somewhere in between)?

 

I don't mean to be all negative but a better coaching staff is what Cam and every single one of our young players need...and also to get rid of the remaining Fox-era shadows.  

 

I don't pass judgement lightly but if we can't get through the Vikes, get yourselves ready for an even more tumultuous season. Yes, this can be traced back to old JR but even someone like him will make a good move every little smidgin once-in-a-while, let's hope the next is good.

 

TLDR...the grass is green

Ha I'm not thinking that ahead but if I did, I'd be indifferent to Ken...slightly on the favorable side.  He gets A LOT out of his QBs.  If we added a sure-thing WR (FA or Draft), he's a mind that could get a Cam-young WR1 connection going.

Honestly not sure if we have the worst staff in the league. During games it definitely feels like it sometimes. In the second half of the Arizona game it sure felt like it. Sometimes I remind myself that the coaches are professionals, and they must know something I don't. Other times, I'm not so sure.

 

I wouldn't really care where our coaching staff ranked if we won games. But I suppose if we did win games, we wouldn't have a coaching staff that you'd rank at the bottom of the league. Basically a chicken-and-the-egg kind of deal.

 

I have very little faith in the coaching staff to turn the team around. They've been dealing with the same problems for most of Rivera's stint here. I don't think they can or will suddenly change what's been happening since Rivera became coach here.

 

And fwiw, my opinion that coaching has minimal effect in the NFL has dramatically changed. The Chiefs were awful last year. They got a new quarterback and brought in Andy Reid. Alex Smith is a decent quarterback, but not a cornerstone player who can win you a bunch of games each year just with talent. Andy Reid to me makes all the difference for them.

 

I'm not sure that this is totally accurate example, but I also think that coaching did a lot for the Colts in 2012. Yes, they got Andrew Luck and he's done well for them. But I think coaching played in a big part in their absurdly quick turnaround from worst team in the league to playoff team.

 

The 49ers are a good example too, and the team that I think mirrors ours closest. Singletary didn't make the most of the talent they had. Harbaugh has. I'm not saying we have the talent level that SF has, because I don't think we do. But I think parallels exist between us and 9ers anyway.

A big problem with the Steelers is that their defense is very old for NFL standards

 

The 2011 draft especially killed them.  They're still stinging from that and 2012 wasn't that all impressive.

 

I really thought Curtis Brown would make a mark but he was nonexistent after getting drafted.

Worst staff in the league? I'd say no. McDerp is coaching well. Our DB and Special Teams coach are both highly respected. Our RB coach is well respected.

We just have a lot of inexperience on offense with Proehl and Dorsey. And Shula is Shula.

Rivera is just a coordinator IMO.

I get your reasoning from our perspective, but who's would you deem worse?

 

I can see the Bucs...but it get's very blurry after that haha

No clue. I just know what we have here. Players can make the coach look better than he is as well.

      Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.

      My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.

      He wasn't a JAG, he's been a starter every year of his career. Didn't turn into the superstar it seemed like he might his rookie year, but I think part of that has been being misused. Guy was/is a baller.
