Gil Brandt: Hakeem Nicks to Panthers Make Sense

What am I avoiding exactly?

Should we be scrambling to throw money at Bowe and Lloyd too? Cause they did great a few years ago?

You pay for people whose production is on the way up, not down.

I don't think picking up Nicks would be a bad thing.  Basically, you'd be bringing him in on a prove-it basis.  He's a FA after the season, so if you are not sold, then you don't have to re-sign him, but if he comes in and helps to take this offense to the next level, then we can re-sign him or even tag him allowing us to negotiate with him exclusively.

And while we would be giving up Stewart, we really don't need both him and Dwill.  Now whether you rather trade Dwill or Stew is personal opinion.  But the team does not need them both, so giving up one for a receiver that has shown that he can be good when healthy only makes sense.  It would also clear Stews' contract from next year's cap, freeing us to potentially lock up Hardy and/or fill some other holes in FA.

Nicks makes more sense for us than Stewart does for NY. Face it, with his contract and durability issues, Stewart is untradeable.

But how much would they actually be on the hook for?  We'd have to eat his bonus money, so really, they would only be responsible for his base salary and any roster bonuses.

So it would really be similar to us with Nicks, he'd be there on a prove-it deal.  If he works out, they can either pay his salary or try to re-negotiate his contract (which he would probably be open to for the added security it would bring).  However, if he doesn't work out, they can just cut him after the season, avoiding any roster and workout bonuses.  And since it is unlikely they will re-sign Nicks anyway, this really is a no-lose for both teams.

Do we have such short term memory that we forget that not even two years ago Nicks had one of the best postseasons from a WR ever? If you dont think hes an elite receiver when healthy youre crazy

i suspect some guys here dont watch football outside of panthers games or else they wouldnt be asking such silly questions.  they also seem content with another ho-hum season and cant wait for the draft next year.

If this trade was going to happen, it would have happened when Beason was shipped to the Giants.  Gettleman would know better than any other GM in the league whether the Giants are actually interested in moving Nicks, and hell, he might know something about him that would make him uninterested in trading for him.  Although bringing in a proven WR back to his hometown makes a lot of sense on paper.

But it's just like you to leave out key information.

Ok. If long past seasons are what you want to debate then I counter with Jonathan Stewart had over 1,000 yards and 10 TD's in 2009.

OH WERE YOU GONNA JUST LEAVE THAT OUT?!!1!!! WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO HIDE?!!11!

Free agent / trade WRs have an unfortunate habit of becoming bad investments. A pretty good number of them don't duplicate the success they had on their old team with their new one.

Some do. A lot don't.

That's as big a reason as anything why I'm hesitant to give something up to get him.

Nicks makes sense, but isn't worth losing Stewart for. I do think Stewart won't be a Panther in 2 years time unless he proves he can stay healthy and is willing to take a major pay cut. If we could get Nicks and some later picks for Lafell and our 3rd rounder then I might be interested.

    • This while he didn't single handily LOSE the game on any one play.....    He was a first overall pick, one we paid a fortune for..... the bar for him is a 10 foot dunk not a 5"8 children's rim.   32 for 49 for 287 with 1 td and 1 int in two games vs the worst team in the conference, two critically important games that we would be 9-5 and competing for the #2 if he had led us to victory....   Ive given him props for the TD to tet.... it was the best pass ive ever seen him make.....   But putting up these kind of numbers isn't up to par. Defenses stack the box and dare him to throw....  and he still puts up medicore at best numbers.    To win with Bryce young the entire rest of the team has to be absolutely perfect to make up for his deficiencies.... so while he didn't "lose" this game for us..... HE DEFFINATLY DIDNT GO WIN IT FOR US. (Which is the REALISTIC EXPECTATION)
    • His O is just built on taking repeated shots and that’s not BY’s game.  It was always a round peg and square hole…. But I also agree with your post.  I hate OC HCs.  Especially green ones.   I never liked anything about the setup
    • I get that. He's also trying to do HC and OC this year which I think is just too much for him. I think it's hard to call plays from the sidelines. That view from up top helps them see what a defense is doing better. A few HCs can do it because they have the QBs and experience to pull it off. DC has neither. I think DC may have spread himself too thin and Bryce isn't the QB to be able to pull of his end of it either. How much they compliment each other in creating this offensive bleh, yet to be determined. Doesn't really matter because it's still awful.
