He's been playing outside CB since last year. It started out with Gamble & Norman, Norman got benched & Gamble landed on IR, and Captain and later Thomas were starting outside for much of the year.

 

This year, it has again been Captain starting outside in every game I believe. He may move into the nickel in certain formations, but he's always on the field, even in 2 CB sets.

 

First of all, I can't remember the exact number, but I remember reading that we run something like 64% of our defensive snaps with a nickle back.  That alone says Captain plays predominantly in the slot at nickle like I said.  Second of all, I don't think Captain is a starter when we have 2 CB sets.  Since Florence came back it's been him and Thomas.  When Thomas was out it was White.  Last year when Gamble went out it was the Joshes until like week 10 or 11 when Norman got benched and Captain started starting in those ~36% of snaps when he wasn't the NB.  Bottom line, Captain is a nickle back.  He's good when he's a nickle back.  Rivera knows this.  Rivera plays him predominantly at nickle back.  When Captain plays near the sideline, he gets torched. 

 

I like Captain, I think he's great at what he does.  What he doesn't do is cover flankers.  I actually think he could convert to WR and immediately be our 4th best WR.  He's damn sure a better receiver than AE ever was, as I said in a thread weeks ago I think Captain, playing CB, has more catches, more yards, and DEFINITELY more TDs than AE ever did.  He's also beating Hixon in each of those stats this year.

 

But he's a nickle back.  Not a starting CB covering starting WRs out wide.  If at least 64% of snaps he plays is at nickle, he's a nickle.

I admittedly poo on his play often, and I still prefer him in the nickel.  He deserves all the praise he's been getting thus far.

Well in a couple of weeks we are going to find out just how good he is.  We have New Orleans and New England that love the slot position.  If the Captain does his job as we hope he will.  We will have a good chance of winning those games.

 

I like Captain because he is a scrapper.  Kind of a Smith on defense.  A bit undersized but refuses to allow that to be an excuse.

 

That pick Sunday could have easily fallen incomplete or he could have dropped it.  Those floaters can cause any receiver problems but he concentrated, made the catch and the presence to get up and run. 

 

I hope he gets another Pick 6 to tie Tillman.

Corner backs have it tough in the arena of public opinion. Unless you are one of the two CBs each year with mega interceptions, everyone is harping on you for not making the big splash. Some of the best shutdown corners are the ones no one talks about. They don't get many interceptions, don't get beat, simply because the other team doesn't throw to their side of the field anymore. Chris Gamble was one of those types. Munnerlyn gets tested a lot, because of his size. It's good to see that statistically he's holding up well.

Munnerlyn is on the field when Carolina has two CBs on the field. His pick 6 on Sunday was from a two cb set.

this doesn't move me! He still sucks, and the two plays he acted on weren't forced by him! He does more chasing than one on one takeaways. hmmm... that said did not Josh Norman do this in preseason? Just saying, don't keep smoking and passing because we have won a few easier games! remember we lost far more equal games than we've won against weaker teams based on there circumstances. a win is a win but all are not equal. 

 

now in reference to Cap again. he's a nickel at best and he's OKAY. by default and the play of the front he has made plays, otherwise he still is doing a lot of chasing and swatting. and I'm being realistic and honest. it will be you that don't like my comments to change when he gets burned against a superior team.

can't agree here... Captain has been chasing and swatting far before the RR admin. nevertheless as I stated by default he's our best. in reference to the league, maybe. but how many of his takeaways were from him being in position  against the WR and he grabbed it? NOT MANY, and this year, NOT ANY. lol... but what I do like about him is without a doubt he is the most physical CB we have. he aggressive and it wouldn't shock me to see him bit some ankles if need be. hahaha
