McDermott and Shula

Our defense is a top 5 defense and our offense is now becoming very steady and productive.

As coaches on the hot seat lose their jobs you gotta wonder if these two will become candidates for head coaching jobs.

The last time we had a top ranked defense (2nd I believe in 2002) we lost Jack Del Rio our DC to Jacksonville.

Right now I believe McDermott has a huge upside but might be too young to run a team.  Mike Shula is a retread and might get a look.

Now to my question.  If we lose either of these coaches, who replaces them.

Defensively I would like to see Wilks get the job.  I think hiring up the current staff gives us the best opportunity to keep the same scheme and defensive playbook.

Offensively replacing Shula from within would be tougher than the defensive side of the ball.  Mainly because Shula was brought up from the Chudz staff and the playbook is basically the same.  Though Shula is not as high octane as Chudz was, I like the efficiency. (getting better I should say)

Would you choose from within or go outside the organization for someone else.

My God...they've only won 3 games. You would think the Panther's had just won the SB.

I don't think anyone is going to be knocking on the doors to hire them away at this point. MAYBE in a year or two but only if they prove they can produce consistently.

I NEVER IMPLIED WE WON THE SUPER BOWL.  You don't have to win the Super Bowl to lose a coordinator.   Chudz in Cleveland is a prime example.   He was also interviewed after Cam's rookie year but didn't get a position.

Jack Del Rio was our defensive coordinator for ONE season but ranked #2 we are currently #3.  McDermott is young and the defense has been solid all year.   Don't think for one second teams with coaches on the hot seat don't notice this.

Shula I would agree but if Shula puts us on the positive side of the W/L record.  His name will surface too.

I still don't think McDermott's ready to be a head coach.

Not even close and I don't think he is interested right now . He was completely overwhelmed when he was thrown into the role of DC when Johnson passed away. McDermott needs a few more years under his belt to build his resume and is in a great spot right now and I think he knows it.

    • in starts, he has played better, been more efficient and outproduced Bryce by virtually every statistical metric that exists in 2025.  And has the 2 head to heads over Carolina.  I mean, your jaw should hit the floor.  But not for the reason you are implying.  That freaking stings.  Denying these realities isn't going to help the Panthers build a better team going forward.
    • He is basically having a polar opposite rookie season than Bryce. 4-3 as a starter on a very bad team.  68% for 237 passing yards and 19 rush per game. 9 TDs,  6 TOs in his starts.  and folks acknowledge the surprisingly play because no one thought poo of the random 2nd rounder and he is player better as a rookie thus far than so many prized picks did as a rookies (not just Bryce but a boatload of dudes).   It's only a sour issue to give someone props because he is a Saint and of course the Bryce thing.  It's like giving the TE in Clev props for having near identical production as the chosen one Tyler Warren.  Fannin is having a great rookie season in a very bad spot.
    • This is a very weird take. The reason Shough doesn't deserve it is because he's only started 7 games. He's doing crazy well for a rookie and out playing plenty of vets with a worse roster. He's waaay above league average in a number of categories during his starts and he passes the eye test in game by making plays. Meanwhile Bryce Young had one of the worst rookie seasons of all time. Still TMac deserves it more. It's only been 7 games for Shough so he doesn't deserve any awards. Even if he gets to 9 he doesn't.
