I think the overlooked element of the Carolina Panthers and their three-game winning streak is the defense, because everyone focuses on quarterback Cam Newton.

Carolina's front seven is exceptional. And I think Sean McDermott, their defensive coordinator, has done a great job with his coverage concepts to camouflage some individual weaknesses in the secondary. We think of coverage as just the secondary, and it’s not just them. The coverage concepts include linebackers, and the Panthers have two excellent coverage linebackers.

 

The Panthers play nickel often, and I’d argue Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis are the fastest pair of nickel linebackers in the NFL. That’s a very overlooked element of defense if you’re going to play nickel instead of dime.

Carolina also has a terrific defensive line rotation with multidimensional and versatile players. Greg Hardy is a player who rarely gets talked about, but he plays defensive tackle and defensive end and is a really good player. They’ve gotten good snaps out of both rookies at defensive tackle, Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short, who is really talented physically but played too many snaps in college. He has played about 35 snaps a game this season and has been really effective.

Defensively, they’re very good. Then offensively, they have a lot of talent and many dimensions, which makes them tough to defend.

Anybody ever think that maybe when Cam gets time to you know, go through his progressions and has room to step up in a pocket he's absolutely lights out?

 

Thank the poor defenses we've played as of late and Shula for tossing in more screens and quick developing plays to wear down those Dlinemen.

I think the issue with Newton has always been that he's a little slow to process and isolate the necessary information. He has been a beat late with throws, he has had some issues with accuracy. I think over the last three or four games – and nobody can answer why, but it’s there on film – he is processing better, the ball is coming out of his hand a lot quicker to the right receiver at the right time and he has recognized coverages better.

Also, their run game is extremely versatile and difficult to defend because so much involves Newton. When your quarterback is part of your run game, you can do so much more in the backfield with formation, personnel and backfield actions. The defense has to account for the quarterback as part of the run game. And the Panthers do a lot of different things in the run game.

LaFell is one of those receivers that can drop one pass and bring out the cries of, "we need a #2". Then when he continues to make clutch catches somehow he is not mentioned until he drops another one. But he has improved every year and is way above average.

They ran a basic quarterback power with the right guard pulling left, but with a read option element added to it.

 

 

We pretty much brought back the Quarterback run to the point they use words like "basic" to describe it. I know Vick ran a few designed runs but it was more of a gimmick based on his speed. The Panthers have made the well designed QB run in vogue. Just like we did the Wildcat. But I'm sure ESPN will tell you Shanahan and Harbaugh invented it.

      I hope we're not going all in this year. We couldn't outright win our own division with a losing record. We had 2 anomalous wins. Typically you aren't going to win scoring 13 and have your opponent have an absolute train wreck offense.  Also, a team scoring 16 on 6 trips to the red zone is not normal either. I'm not trying to be a pessimist. We're not there. Bryce isn't there. Most of the year our offense legitimately struggled and the missing piece wasn't a TE. Keep building through the draft and reasonable FA. When we have a team that's on the edge of being able to make a legitimate SB run, then go all in. Otherwise, going all in right now feels like another Bryce situation. Sell out and pray. That's not how consistent winners are built.

      XL might never reach his full potential here but I think he does have a legitimate shot at becoming a pretty good #2-3. We knew when we picked him that he was raw but his athletic traits were hard to pass on.  I still remember coming here and telling 85% of huddlers to not give up on DB yet after his first couple of years here.  I just knew DB was going to special. I wouldn't put XL in that exact same category but I wouldn't write him off yet. I think our playcalling is also working against his strengths.  At the very least, we should have a servicable #3 receiver w/ speed between XL, Horn Jr, and Meetchie.

      I think we haven't praised Morgan/tilis enough. In this thread we have some huddles best and its hard to figure out what to do with the 19th pick, if you understand that. Im also posting what "I" believe they are doing and what I feel is best. Those FA signess send a clear signal- They are going all-in to win this coming season. If you factor that in, just believe it first, it 100% changes what going on with pick 19, cause 51st pick doesn't matter as the talent level drop is petty big between the two. So 19 is the biggest difference maker on the current plan of all-in for the 2026.  Then you factor in who will be there at, (I better hold off on my other strong thought here- I think trade up is the best help too, yes using that 3rd to do so too...) DT, ILB(Allen? he didn't run), OC, QB(ooo my I don't want to rage drool my hate again about how I feel here, plus F it draft TY simp not joking)....... those 4 groups don't have the "BPA" at 19. You can add ILB Hill in there, but I feel 19 just is too high, other disagree.  Slot or TE it is......Kenyon is the only TE worth a 1st and he's the classic draft dilemma- All sort of he's a top ten lock to he's a non-blocking one trick WR that's not even worth 2nd currency. Then there's he's the clear winner from the TE group, thus increases his value more no matter the opinion.  Honestly I see the Matt Millen outcome as the current odds favorite, I think the huddle would go bonkers for weeks as result......just the truth tho, WR had the highest odds to be the clear BPA and slot is a need...plus if we are talking about Walker being a one year deal, Coker is a one year too(he may have another controll yr, I got to confirm it tho). Plus God forbid Tmac gets hurt, the drop in talent from him or Coker to Moore is fuging scary, I'd say more than the recent OT stone fellow. It goes back back to adding talent no matter what, draft now help, and where are  the weak points are in the system you want to run....
