Hardest conditions to shoot in....

Zod

Recommended Posts

Just an FYI and for anyone interested in photography, yesterday's game was an example of why 1:00 games in the fall are the most challenging.

The Panthers have an east to west field, so the field is split lengthwise from shade to sun. So an any time you are shooting a subject either lit with a shady background or a subject in the shade with a lit background. Often times you are shooting both as the play moves from one side of the field to another. If you were at the game you noticed they have the lights on to help with this problem, but it doesn't do much.

Notice how the crowd in this shot is completely white and washes out. They are in the sun. The players are being lit by the stadium lights and the reflected sunlight.

Actually, it is difficult shooting south from the north sideline at all for most of the game because there is so much sun flare from the sun being much lower in the sky compared to September.

But there is a bright side to this type of problem. If you know what you are doing you can use the sun as a rim light to outline the cheerleaders while the reflected light off the bleachers provide a soft lighting for their front. The result is quite pleasing...

zod, what's the protocol for shooting down on the field? i noticed a gaggle of photographers in vests huddled down on the field before kickoff and it made me wonder how you guys are assigned. do you get a certain part of the field you're relegated to, or can you roam at will?

I get ya not easy job for sure . Sun can be harsh and challenging. Mixed conditions with action is tough ,great job Zod but that's why you are on the field. Anyone that knows better blown out background no problem, action is spot on . Seeing I am female I don't look at the cheerleader shots the same as the other huddlers.  I admire the backlighting instead.

That half shade half light poo looks crappy on TV I know that...  wasn't that much better in person either...

fwiw J saw the short haired brunette as shown above and said "hey, isn't that the Topcat that Zod photographed?"

Sure enough...  smokin' hot.

Matter of fact, the Topcats overall are pretty much all smokin' hot now.

    • Mel Kiper said he would retire if Jimmy Clausen wasn't a successful NFL starter too. Just because the experts make a claim doesnt mean it's true either.  Bryce may be a serviceable QB for someone. Serviceable QBs don't bring you a perennial winner or lead you to the playoffs over and over. Serviceable QBs also dont get 50m plus per year deals which is what a Bryce extension would look like.  The stats show he hasn't been even a serviceable QB in the 3 years he's been here. The eye test shows he hasn't put together 2 franchise QB salary games back to back in 3 years.  Complain all you want about people being negative, but people pointing out that Bryce is held to a different standard than anyone else on the team isn't complaining. It's stating the obvious.
    • We have big bodied WRs and 3 TEs who all have potential and each bring something different to the table. I never saw the need to go out there and try and find a new starting TE.  While it's nice to have a guy like McBride, Bowers, etc, I think a team's better use of the cap is by having TEs on rookie contracts or cheap vets, not having to pay elite TE money.
    • He had the award until like the last 8 games. He sucked ass and flagg had 3 40 point games
