Another example of the "next man up" working out well. Second-year guardAmini Silatolu was starting to come into his own before injury struck, but veteran Travelle Wharton has come in and played even better. In reuniting him with Jordan Gross on the left side, the team may have one of the oldest guard-tackle duos, but they also have one of the best. Neither allows much pressure and they're both strong enough at the point of attack that they can get movement in the running game. The more worrying aspect is the right side of the line, where Byron Bell is barely adequate and converted defensive lineman Nate Chandler is experiencing many of the same problems J.R. Sweezy has. It's fine mauling someone, but dropping back into a pass-blocking set takes a lot of mastering. Chandler can still improve there.

I feel great about our guards next year. If we can resign gross, I think the line would be fine by simply drafting our next RT. we can find our future at LT in 2015.

Chandler and Bell would bring down the collective numbers of 2 or 3 offensive lines. How we ended up as the 5th best is beyond me. It's either an example of parity in the league or a bad PFF fug up.

Chandler was terrible sunday. i think he's better suited as a tackle. I'll cut him some slack because it was first game though.

Most of Chandler's mistakes were mental rather than physical, he missed a few pickups on blitzes and stunts. That's actually encouraging, you can fix those much quicker than technique and athletic issues.

Indeed. This team has had issues in pass protection this season. I know Wharton's high grade comes exclusively from his strong run blocking but he's done fairly poorly in pass protection. Chandler seems to be a pass protector and we'd benefit significantly from him developing quickly.
