D-Will Motivated against the Patriots

this.

between the lines...having a chip on your shoulder over a certain team not drafting you says you didn't like the team that ended up picking you.

Not at all.  That's a butthurt fan's view of the situation.

The draft process is really intensive.  Seeing as DeAngelo talked about what the Patriots said to him, that means that he probably interviewed with them.  They probably worked him out too.  Basically, they showed lots of interest in him, but all of their evaluations resulted in them selecting a different guy at the same position.

The ONLY way that DeAngelo can view that is that the Patriots didn't think he was as good as Maroney.  It's not like he's haunted by their decision and he's bitter about it to this day or anything, but I totally understand if he'd feel a bit of extra satisfaction by having a big game against them.  If you were in his shoes, wouldn't you want to make Bellichek kick himself after the game for drafting some loser over you?

I remember that draft very fondly.  I thought it was complete BS that Bush won the heisman (which has since been taken away) when statistically Dwill outperformed him and Vince Young was easily the single most valuable player in college.

I absolutely loved Dwill, but was convinced due to our draft position and our needs we wouldn't grab him.  I freaked when I found out we had taken him.

I forgot about the patriots drafting maroney

A lot of other fans around the league must have forgotten that as well because all you hear about is how much of a great, flawless talent evaluator he is

They traded up to get ahead of us and take him.

It's been reported since that Hurney had Maroney higher on his draft board than Williams, so in essence their dumb move saved us from a Hurney mistake.

That was a really good crop of RBs that year. Deangelo, MJD, and Reggie Bush are all still tearing it up 7 years later.

Leon Washington, Mike Bell still around, too. Maroney, Addai, Lendale White, not so much.

I don't remember if you were around then, but there were people on here screaming bloody murder because we took Williams over LenDale White.

Ya and then in the next round they traded up for a talentless receiver, giving up a third in the process.

Are we sure the two franchises didn't do some weird executive exchange involving Hurney just for that draft?

I think DWill got a shot of confidence last week. That TD run had a little of everything he still brings to the table. Burst through the hole, break it outside when necessary, use speed to get to the corner ahead of the Safety. Even with the Ginn Jr. block, he still needed a good burst to get that corner.

Thankfully, the days of worrying how our FO is going to fug up the draft are over.  The culture is changing for the better. Hope and Faith are back in vogue. The Panthers are playing great football, words we thought had become extinct like Playoffs, and Super Bowl are now back in our lexicon, and best of all, things seem to be going our way lately.

We have a Football guy running the show now. And all is well with the world.

I might buy into that theory if their history of recent draft mistakes were confined to that year alone.

They most certainly are not. The Patriots make headscratching draft choices on pretty much an annual basis.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
