Gonzalez....Falcons have not quit on coach Smith

Smith is a great coach and the failings of this falcons team rest on the shoulders of dimitroff.

If they fired smith he'd be hired the next day by someone else.

"Great" miiighhttt be pushing it.  Definitely a good coach though.

GMs like Dimitroff always end up like this.  They come in with this young, hip swagger like they know what it takes to win in this league.  Like they have some secret formula that the older GMs could not fathom to ever understand.  Then they make big "splashes" in free agency and compound picks for blockbuster trades.

It ends up being a flash in the pan.  You get some production for a while but then problems arise.  How do you pay all these big names?  Where do you come up with the draft picks to breed depth, competition and maybe even future stars?  What do you do when suddenly positions you thought any schmuck could fill in at are suddenly huge detriments to the success of the team (I'm looking at your trenches Falcons)?

Dimitroff isn't the first guy to come into this league thinking "Hey it's a passing league right?  Well lets just get the best receiving targets available and score a ton of points." only to have it backfire right in his face.  I'm sure he won't be the last either.

They gave up a too much for Julio Jones and that was the beginning of the end I think. I am not a big fan of drafting skill players high in the 1st round anyway unless it is a franchise QB or a beast like Adrian Peterson. You wanna build a team use your high picks on the trenches i.e. o-line and d-line. If you have a solid D-line and a solid O-line, you're already a .500 team even if you suck everywhere else. Julio is a great player, but he was not worth it (I think they gave up like 5 picks to move up to 6th).

I'm fine with a team taking a high profile receiver like Julio high.  You have to do it the right way.  First you have to be sure the guy is actually the real deal (they got lucky in that regard to Julio, he still needs a little polish but he is a very talented player).  Second you need to value how much you are going to mortgage to get him.  Falcons gave up WAY, WAY, WAY too much.

Do it like the Bengals did for AJ.  It's your pick, there's a guaranteed stud of a receiver available, you have a young talented defense, take him.

I get a 2 day ban for saying the D word (no not the bag but the male thing) but people can make posts about a division rival on a panthers board and get away with it. This saddens me. (No disrespect to the OP, just had to throw this out there)

You can't say that 4 letter d word that rhymes with Rick?

1. When did they draft Julio and how many playoff appearances have they made? Hardly the beginning of the end.

2. The rest is why you're not a GM.

The fact that you don't understand the difference tells me that you should stop posting.

Spot on.

If a guy like AJ or Calvin is there you get them with your pick or even move up a little to get them.

You do NOT mortgange multiple year's first rounders to go get them....it is just that simple.

They have zero depth and no defense.

lol anybody who watched us get curb stomped by the Bucs knows we've quit on this season. It's obvious.

Your team just sucks dude. Live with it cause its going to be around for awhile.

Also I think people are too focused on the Julio trade and miss the fact the Falcons just draft bad. That's what has caused there down fall not trading away a year of picks. Its the Hurney effect. They would be better off blowing things up and starting over but they want and will trade away more future draft picks to try to keep the boat afloat.

Pointless dimwitted response. Julio didn't propell them to the playoffs. This has nothing to do with playoff appearance. This is a team sport and no one player has that type of impact. They've been a playoff team since smith got there (that's before julio was drafted Einstein) with the exception of 09 and this year. What's your pt? If you read most of the responses, we're saying it is never a good idea to mortgage your future on skill players unless they are worth it. You're a moron....smh.
