Great story about the moment Rivera noticed a change in Cam.

 

 

It happened in a hotel in the Washington, D.C., area when Sgt. First Class Cedric King spoke to the team the Saturday night before a November game against the Redskins.

It happened when Cam Newton bent his towering 6-foot-5 frame over and began talking to King, in a wheelchair after losing both of his legs in Afghanistan. Rivera observed as Newton held King's hand and rubbed his back in such a caring way that, "I thought he was going to well up."

"There was a connection there you saw," Rivera told ESPN.com. "It's like, 'Wow, I'm going through a tough time, but this guy really has had it tough.' It made him kind of put things in perspective. I think that helped him a lot."

The King's speech

 

 

Not long into his introduction to Rivera, King told a story about his time at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington.

 

 

King told of a doctor who took him to a ward, pointed to one side of the room and said, "Those are the guys that are waiting to die." The doctor then pointed to the other and said, "Those are the guys that want to live."

 

 

King turned his wheelchair and rolled quickly to the side of those who wanted to live.

 

 

Rivera asked him how he maintained such a positive daily outlook. King told him he gets up every morning thinking something good is going to happen. Like on that morning, he had no idea he would meet Rivera.

"Then he says, 'Tomorrow I'm going to the game to see you guys win, and Monday I'm getting my new legs,'" Rivera recalled. "I said, 'Wow, you've got to talk to my team.'"

 

 

Rivera began the introduction to his players by reminding them that he always talks about opportunities and chances, and how they are what you make of them. He proceeded to call King "a guy whose opportunities have all been changed."

 

 

"We talked about pride, we talked about belief, we talked about inspiration, teamwork and leadership," King said. "That was all the principles [Rivera] wanted the team to hear from me."

 

 

King went on to share how he was injured, how he decided to live.

 

 

"And then he said, 'Tomorrow morning, I'm going to get up and I'm going to go watch you guys win,'" Rivera said. "And we won."

Stats since that game?

So Cam's revelation came last season vs Washington and Rivera's came in the aftermath of the Buffalo loss.

Glad they were humbled, but got up, re-examined and pressed on.

 

39 total TDs, 12 INTs since then

 

Over a 16 game stretch (which ends at the TNF Bucs game) it's 34 TDs and 9 INTs.

      I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.

      holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!

      Well, if they know Tepper wants to keep Bryce there is an an implied safety net there in case he fails. A possibility that he will be empathetic and •maybe• not fire them.  If they go against that and bring in someone else and that fails they are in a much worse spot.  IMO.  And another factor may be that after all those years of instability and musical chairs pre Bryce there will likely be a feeling of security in knowing what they have.   Kind of like settling just to keep from going through the process all over again.     IOW I think he really needs to fug up bad to lose his job and change our course.
