What's wrong with the offense? (serious thread)

We all know that we got away with one yesterday, and that's cool, but normally we lose that game, as do most teams.

Is Cam hurt or injured?  At one point I was calling to have him take a seat, as I wasn't sure if he was hurting or helping the team out there.

Is Ron wanting these close games, or is Shula not creative enough to see holes in defenses?  Not sure if we are holding this O back so as not to increase turnovers, or if we are not able to exploit defenses.

If we are unable to exploit defenses, it's because of either talent or scheme, personally, I think it's both.  Cam is missing WR's, and at the same time WR's are not getting consistently open out there.

What can we do between now and our first playoff game to get this kitten purring?

Bad route options for Jody B is a major problem. Too often we have him running a seam route or deep out, he's just not suited for those types of routes. Lafell in order to get open should be running routes across the face of the defender to get his entire body in front of the defender. Cam is also having to wait way too long for routes too develop while typically only having Olsen as a check down, our pass protection is adequate but not great at all. Also Cam needs to do a better job at anticipating where the receivers will be and throw the ball for them to run under it.

I think we have gotten away with the short throws on early downs. I believe we had specifically tried to play ball control offence to keep the d fresh. However unsuccessful 1st and second down runs leave us with 3rd and long. we are not set up to give protection that long. I think we need to mix up some short passes in on 1st and second down in order to make 1st downs more manageable. By throwing some short easy completions you get cam in rhythm, and allow our wr a chance to get used to catching. Once they are you run some play action and hit down field. we have lost our dink and dunk plays that had us looking improved on offence. I think our game plan is working but i think we could do alot better with a small adjustment.

Cam being banged up, Smitty being out, Shula out there being Shula, lack of play makers, sloppy conditions, and the Saints being a decent defense all led to a bad day. The lack of big plays is still concerning, because we have essentially the same personnel we've had the past couple of years, just a different man calling the plays.

I was going to take this thread seriously until I got to this line...then I stopped reading.

It's not a talent thing, I was seriously curious if he was hurt.  Ankles or knees or something.  He does have a habit of throwing high, but yesterday it was pretty obvious that something wasn't right.

Too many 3rd and longs, Cam's throwing high due to pressure and injury, below average WR's not able to make something out of nothing, o line not getting it done in run or pass blocking, and a pedestrian backfield not able to work in anything but optimal conditions.

Agree with this, and this is almost all talent driven.

It seems the we can't figure out how to scheme around the talent....or it could be that we are, and this is how bad the talent level is out there.

    • I think you misunderstand what I mean by "significantly better than Bryce Young." That gets you entry into the top 30 NFL starting QB's. Not sure if you have seen that group recently, but it's not a strong one the further down that list you go. Murray is a Tier 3 if not Tier 4 QB in my book.
    • Here is where you are… for purely the sake of arguing with me you are willing to suggest the 2025 Saints RBs might not be better than the 2025 Panthers RBs lol Saints have the 28th ranked rush attack.  We are top 10.   The Saints haven’t had a 100 yard rusher the entire season.  We have seen franchise best performances in a franchise known for running the rock. and see above for what our OL is also clearly better than the Saints.  Hell, Canales being forced into some mashups has often made it even stronger at times
    • I am not saying there isn't truth to that but the economics and reality of the NFL are producing that. It's very hard to justify taking a guy in the 1st round, shelving him for years, having to make a contract extension and THEN hoping it all turns out okay. Not to mention, imagine that scenario after what we traded for Bryce. One thing is for certain, the QB desperation has led to bad 1st round QB picks for 15+ years now. That ain't new.  I think we need to decide on Bryce's future this offseason and we will have to. In my eyes, picking up the 5th year option is the "all-in" move for a two year period. That means you are committed to him in the medium term. Not the move I would personally make.  No matter what the decision is, I have been vocal about needing to bring in multiple QB's to improve that QB room for when Bryce falters again. How about just overall improving your team depth so that when it doesn't pan out, you at least have options on the roster? I don't feel like that is too much to ask and it's a valid bet hedge.
