Panthers likely to begin contract discussions with Cam this Offseason

That's possible. But, remember, the panthers have no argument for Cam to stay.

But there is another impetus for him to sign a reasonable contract. The threat of injury. No player wants to hold out on a $5M contract for two more years with say $18M staring you in the face. Almost no QB has ever told their rookie team to stuff it over a few million. They all want to get extended ASAP.

Both sides want a deal.

Add to this the teams with lots of cap space are usually the crappiest. Next year will be Bills, Browns, Jags etc. It is hard to find a team that will be both competitive and have the money.

If he wants it, he'll get it.

Do you think the Panthers are prepared to watch him walk out the door?  Or that another team wouldn't be prepared to pay it if the Panthers aren't?

The ONLY factor holding Cam back from making that much is himself (i.e. what others have noted, he's prepared to take a home-town discount to help build a better team).

P.S The idiot exec who compared Cam's leverage or skill level to a Matt Schaub contract?  Well, the NFL is still full of idiots.  All you have to do is look around at some of the teams in the league to prove that.

They forgot Cam was a #1 overall pick in the draft and the countless records he has broken in his 3 years as a pro. And with all the crap they talk about his accuracy he still put up the 3rd most passing yards in 3 years needing about 300 more to become the 2nd. Not to mention his rushing yards and TDs.

Bradford's contract is a complete outlier in this. The Rams simply made a mistake.

If the old system was still in place when Cam was drafted he would have had 50 something guaranteed in his rookie deal.

Stafford was at 41 the year prior to Bradford. Bradford was going to get more than 41. Maybe the Rams could of done 45 or something but the figure was going to be in that area regardless

Exactly.

Newton's holding all the leverage. And way more than many here realize/give him credit for.

Now, that doesn't mean he won't sign and amendable agreement to all parties. He may.

But he sure could hold the Panthers over the barrel for a multiplicity of reasons, if he wanted to.

Romo; Stafford, and Bradford, will only add to this, regardless of their circumstances. They exist.

I don't think Flacco was worth $20 mil a year either, but obviously the Ravens wanted to keep him, and felt he was valuable to THEIR  team (as Dallas did with non SB winning Tony Romo).  Cam's value to the Panthers (on and off the field) is so beyond pure numbers.

I view that exec as an outlier, and most likely Bill Polian.

I know most of them DO NOT FEEL that way in the least (except him). Lol

That's why that guys an EX NFL executive.

I still don't understand whats not to like about this guy.  He has the ability to light up a room and put a smile on everyones face.  He is a great quarterback who is still learning and getting better every game.  Go Panthers!  Lets finish this.

i wasn't joking when i said this earlier last year.

I think Cam is going to surprise people and take less because he wants to win so bad.

I could def see it happening.

The way I see it would work is he will get a HUGE amount of guaranteed money in exchange for a lower annual salary.  Keeps his salary cap down (helps the team), Cam gets his money, and its relatively low risk because I don't see it very likely Cam takes a serious injury.  Especially if we use that cap room to get him a freaking line.

The rookie cap is going to help teams on affording players entering their second deal, not the other way around.

Hey Growl,

Could you expound on your response. The salary cap is confusing for many including myself. What exactly do you mean by that. Is there salary cap benefits to re-signing your own to long deals? Or.........???

I'm talking about the rookie cap, not the salary cap.

The rookie cap was instated to prevent rookies from making obscene amounts of money in their first contract. Some posters here seem to think rookies who had that cap will demand extraordinary contracts to recoup what they "lost," but according to a number of guys inside the league, that is inaccurate. They will get a fair contract, but nothing extreme-which makes sense from a logical standpoint because it's hard for a layer in his first few seasons to play at a level which justifies a 100 million dollar pay increase.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
