In need of plumber / remodeler

Johnny Rockets

Recommended Posts

That is weird... I was just posting in that Philly thread wondering where Johnny Rockets was at...

I thought Zod took care of your "plumbing"...?

I'm trying to stay out of those discussions.....it's not worth my effort. I was actually on a two week vacation from pretty much everything including this place. Some R & R and a trip up to see the family in Philly/South Jersey around the holidays.

Coincidentally, I went on Angies List today and am going to use Rapid Rooter to cleans some pipes as they have great reviews :)

I was just looking at Angie's list and was wondering if it was worth it. Guess I can't go wrong for $14 and give it a try for a month.

I seem to have connections in about every service field except for one....plumbing.

I would highly recommend NOT using Angie's list. Before I elaborate, allow me to make my qualifying statements:

  • I interviewed and hired subcontractors for two major home improvement companies
  • I was a licensed home inspector and conducted real estate home inspections for prospective buyers and energy efficiency audits
  • I was a hired consultant for major renovation and home improvement projects
  • I spent the last 17 years in the home improvement industry

Anyone who uses Angie's List has to pay a subscription rate, including contractors. Therefore, the only contractors you have any access to on Angie's List are those that paid for the site to carry them. This immediately eliminates at least 80% of the contractors available to you.

Here is my recommendation: go to your local Lowe's, Home Depot and Ferguson's Plumbing and ask them who they would recommend. Here's the reason- all of those places I mentioned who use subcontractors to do installation work require them to carry a ridiculous amount of insurance including liability, criminal background checks on all of the employees, a legitimate state contractor's license, etc.

Look and see if there's a Re-Bath franchise in your area. Among everything else, get at least 3 estimates in your home and spend some time talking to these people. Nothing is a better judge than your meeting these people face to face.

Just wait for those guys that drive around with some wood in a pickup and stop at your house asking if you need some work done. They do real good work. Make sure to pay them up front in full. They work faster that way.

Or the guys who will tell you they have leftover driveway sealer and will give you a great deal to coat your asphalt....

You have to pay to use Angies List? And anybody can pay to be listed?

My kids used to bring that "Who's Who" crap home from school that said, basically, that you had to pay to be in there. I told them that was some stupid poo. This appears to be along the same lines.
