Shula in the Playoffs

I know many of you are hoping for a new Shula in the playoffs. I have seen many references to him "holding something back" for when it counts.

 

Sorry to disappoint you, but it won't happen.

 

In 1997 his offense averaged 19 points a game.(30th in the NFL), In the playoffs that year they averaged 13 points per game.

 

In 1999 his offense averaged 17 points a game (28th in the NFL). In the playoffs that year they averaged 10 points per game.

 

 

I know, I know, he had no weapons, we have Cam, he has learned since then, yada yada yada.

 

 

What I am saying is that historically his unit has performed worse in the playoffs than regular season. To those hoping for some improvements as far as coaching goes, history tells us you may be disappointed.

 

What we can all hope for is perfect execution and a few turnovers caused by our defense. Those two things will lead us to victory. There will be little room for error on offense.

 

The question is, how far did his team go in those play-offs during those two years?

 

 Play-offs are one and done. Scoring high doesn't guarantee a team will move on anymore than scoring low. Play-offs is where the team that wants it the most do everything in their power to get the win. A team only needs to score one point better than their opponents to win, we saw that last night with the Colts vs. Chiefs, 44/45 win. IMO

I think execution is the biggest part of the offenses problems of late. The offense was never expolsive but earlier in the season we were able to control the time of possession, convert on third down, and at one point ranked 3rd in redzone TDs. So we were able to sustain long drives and capitalize with a TD and not a FG. Lately we can't convert on 3rd down and when we get in the redzone we get a FG instead of a TD. The offensive line generates little to no running lanes so we face a lot of 3rd & 7 and now the defense knows we have limited options on what we can run. Finally, the receiving core, especially Bradon Lafell have not been able to get separation at all. So we are biting our nails throughout the game hoping that the Panthers defense holds and Cam bails us out at the end. I can't handle another game like that, but i will still watch of course.

If Shula comes out like a duck trying to sabotage the work the team's done this season I'll go nuts.

Yes, you can win with the 26th ranked offense if you have a stout defense. We should be happy about that.

 

But don't pretend that Shula put together a good offense this season. Without Cam's legs it would have ranked dead last in the league. That guy bailed us out countless times.

 

So is it Shula's conservative playing style that is causing the low scores or the players he has to work with where the QB's legs is the best the offense has? I am trying to follow your argument.

Unless they go on an offensive explosion for the next three games and win the super bowl, shula should be fired. There have got to be better options out there.

As much as we get on Shula and his offensive style, he did help Cam to perfect one very important throw that I will always be grateful to Shula for.  The checkdown pass!  In both Cam's rookie and sophmore years, he was always looking for the big play down the field.  Cost us many interceptions when guys were open for big gains after the run only yards away from Cam.  This season, Cam has perfected this pass, and we can see it in his stats.  I'm in favor of getting an OC next year that would be a little more dynamic in the passing game, but I'm grateful towards Shula for teaching Cam the checkdown pass.

double wildcat anyone?

Our WR corp is a 34 year old stud that is now not truly a number 1, a cast off that only caught a couple passes last year, a guy that drops more passes than he catches, and another cast off that has less than 5 catches this year. Outside of Olson and Smitty, I'm not sure any of our other receivers would start for other playoff teams.

On the right side of our line we have a converted DT to OL and a guy that isn't a NFL starter.

We are 12-4 and think Shula has done pretty well considering what he has to work with. Everyone predicted Shula would run HB dives every play and that hasn't been the case. At least Shula knows the identity if this team compared to Chud and coaches accordingly.

That's because the defense drastically improved. If we're going to become a consistent winner. The offense can't rank in the bottom of the nfl.

 

If i remember the Offense had to bail the Defense in several games!? New England, Miami,  

 

This offense can put up points, but lack of execution in the 1st half is what I'm more worried about.

Play calling is overrated. We need our receivers to catch the ball, our QB to throw the ball, our running backs to run the ball, and our lineman to block. Our offense is at it's best when our players play well. Our play calling is less important to me. 3rd and 7 run plays look great when the running back finds a whole, evades the LB and makes the distance.

Execution has been the major problem this year.  Dropped passes, overthrown passes, Cam holding the ball too long, o line lapses, o line getting beat on run blocking.  Given what he has had to work with, Shula has been ok.  Just wish they would stop running the wildcat 1 time per game.  Makes me wonder if there is not a surprise coming off the wildcat coming up.

What we need more than anything..... Is a traditional rush attack to emerge.
