Chances we keep Shula?

Captain Morgan

He got the job only because no real candidates would replace Chud because of the job

security issue....everyone, including us, thought RR and his staff would be gone after this

season.

Promoting Shula helped keep a familiar face with Cam...it really was a no-brainer because we just didn't

have good options.

But RR is going to be retained, and our offense is pretty woeful.  True that we lost all our guards and we

don't have any weapons for Cam, but I don't think there will be many people who say Shula did a good job.

Will Ron be loyal and fight for him?  Will Getty give him another year and try improve the personnel?

Your thoughts?  We'd be an attractive landing spot for a good oc, wouldn't we?

The chances he keeps his job are high. But they shouldn't be. Our offense was in the bottom half of the league and he pooed his pants down the stretch.

We are in a precarious situation right now. Ron has 1 year on his deal left...do you extend him one year and see what happens? If we miss the playoffs next year is Ron gone or do you extend him another year for one last shot? How does all this affect hiring of coordinators?

his cast surrounding his QB was the weakest we have fielded in years....yearS.

I think Riverboat Ron Gambles and does a 180 on Shula.  He needs an aggressive offense to go with an equally aggressive defense.  IMO I think a former HC, not shula, that can help Ron become a greater coach would help.  Also how can we go out and draft WR in the first 2 rounds like you people want and then watch Shula groom them into mediocrity?

Seattle, San Fran....they all run complimentary offense to their good D.  Which is what Shula did.

The other teams mentioned?  Strong OLs.

I don't know it seemed like the same personnel from the past 2 seasons. Smitty is obviously getting older but Cam should be developing. We saw Cam succeed in clutch moments for the first time but no real improvement in his play. Such a big deal was made about "conservative Cam" taking check downs and protecting the football. His interceptions went up by 1.

We can argue about personnel or statistics but at the end of the day it comes down to one question for me: Can we do better than Mike Shula? I say YES.

It's not just about INTs, it's also about completion % (up), TDs (up), 3rd down conversions (up) and time of possession (up.)

    • Ideally Bryce and the other starters should get at least a full quarter and an argument could be made for 2 full quarters given how they've played early in the season the last few years.
    • A rookie that has never played a snap and a proven 1000K NFL WR are not going to be viewed the same in these type rankings.  And calling draft picks, lotto picks, isn't some new quip I just invented.  take the big 3 Hubbard, AT, insert whatever 3rd Panther you want vs Kamara, Hill, Olave.  Most football folks outside of Carolina are picking the Saints there IMO.
    • You didn’t really address the point, just like you ignored the point about the RBs initially, and saying “they are all lotto picks” is just a really silly reduction because you could say that about literally any player rookie or vet every snap, every game, every year. It is well known that different positions have different hit rates, and I would argue different types of prospects within position groups as well, and that hit rates change the further down in the draft you go. Everybody knows QB is different and that, for example, first round OL have a really high success rate. Using your lotto ticket analogy…again…you are saying a lotto ticket with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting is the exact same thing as a lotto ticket with a 1 in 2 chance of hitting (this is an example, don’t take these odds literally). The point was he is no more of a lotto ticket than the 31yr old receiver coming off a major knee injury, and in my opinion he is better odds with a higher potential “jackpot”. Saying one player is an “lotto ticket” while another isn’t is just not sound logic. You have no idea who will break out, regress, get injured, etc. There are safer bets than others, that’s all. I don’t think Diggs is a safe bet and even if he was, weighing him over all of the Panthers WRs plus 2 1k rushers is just dumb. You can disagree if you want. The list is stupid.
