"True Detective" HBO Premier

Perhaps those nuances were just coincidence. Our need for everything to make sense leads us down one path and we feel cheated when things just happen for no reason.

Umbrella Man

yeah yeah yeah....my GF said the same thing. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Here is my in depth, well thought out summary:

I guess the whole thing was basically a story about people who tell stories in there lives to cover up the reality that they don't want to face with a bit of an anti religious, anti pop culture undertone mixed in. Oh, and a happy ending thrown in for good measure because I think most people weren't expecting that not that Pizzolato was going for a "surprise" at all.

The End

Bring on season 2......which will most likely feature women detectives.

I'm not a faith believer, but I thought the most interesting aspect was the spiritual awakening of Rust after nearly dying. Describing seeing his daughter and the feeling he experienced.

To me, however formulaic the final episode was, the final conversation at the end redeemed whatever shortcomings I may have felt preceded it.

Awesome writing.  I kept thinking back to the article someone posted earlier in the thread prior to the finale (I believe it was CK), where Nic Polazzfalksfnlkdgnalga(sp?), the writer, said audiences have become too accustomed to being tricked.  It was good to finally see a show that just gave you good, strong writing and characters and a fluid, believable plot.  The "twist" has become a crutch for writers who lack the sensibilities to produce something like True Detective.

The more I thought about the ending in the days since, I was even more satisfied with it - mainly because I realized Rev. Tuttle's schools and such were funnels for the abuse/abductions/murders at Carcosa, and now he is dead.  Childress is dead.  And the Senator Tuttle denied any connection with them.  It seems that although Hart and Cohle felt somewhat let down that they didn't get to the top, it appears they did, and effectively ended that cult's activities as it all was connected to Carcosa aka Childress' home.

BUT, I will say, I immediately thought if I was Cohle and Hart, I would be relocating ASAP, lol.

The news Rust was watching in the hospital made no mention of the tape or how Rev. Tuttle was connected to the cult. It was almost as if they acted as if it was just Childress doing it all on his own. I could be wrong but I just got the feeling the rabbit hole is deeper then they imagined, and the following seasons different detectives will uncover more pieces to the puzzle.

I was tired all day at work today because I couldn't go to bed after episode 4 and had to watch the rest and I gotta say it was well worth it. Probably the best produced show I've ever seen, especially in just terms of the effort they put into it.

Hadn't thought about that shaq... interesting idea. Now that you mention it, I think it would be cool for the next season to be the detectives that were initially interviewing Rust and Cohle - Pappania (sp?) and the other guy. But, I doubt they do that, as I was under the impression they'll look to use well-known actors for the lead roles each season and it would be separate cases.

As far as the ending... I remember that about the news. I got the impression that the prominent Tuttles just wanted to distance themselves from the situation - like most public figures would. From my perspective, they didn't have to acknowledge it because by discovering Carcosa, they essentially ended whatever went on down there. Tuttle died, Ledoux was killed, and Childress as well. Whatever was left probably didn't have the means to continue whatever they were doing before. IIRC, the newscast said the Tuttles denied knowing those involved or something... so, if it was worded that way or similarly, I'm thinking they were responding to the reports of where the video came from. With the reverend being dead, that couldnt be refuted or confirmed, so them denying any knowledge of it makes sense, but who knows... i'd like to think they stopped it for the most part.

I have heard that it is Winona Ryder and Janeane Garafola who are going to be the next detectives but I don't put much stock in that because from what I heard in an interveiw with Nick Pizzolato, it doesn't sound like he has even finished writing next season.

According to Pizzolato I don't think that was supposed to potray any kind of spiritual awakening but maybe I am reading into what he said too much. It just seems to go against the somewhat anti-religious message the show carried.

You said there was no conversion in the story. But was Cohle suggesting he now believes in some kind of afterlife when he told Hart about his near death experience?

It’s not a belief – he’s talking about an experience. And he’s not talking about a reconciliation with loved ones after death: If you listen to what he says, he says, ‘I was gone. There was no me. Just love… and then I woke up.’ That line is significant to the whole series: “And then I woke up.” The only thing like a conversion that he has is when he says, “You’re looking at it wrong. To me, the light is winning.” And that doesn’t describe a conversion to me as much as it describes a broadening of perspective. The man who once said there is no light at the end of the tunnel is now saying there might be order to this. I don’t think it says anything more than: Pick your stories carefully.

Trying to avoid all TD articles etc for spoilers but I had to comment about the scene I just watched last night. Episode 4 at the end with the drug dealers was fuging awesome, it was like I was in the middle of all the chaos. Amazing
