Something Cam needs to work on this offseason

When the rush is coming from the ends, you gotta step up in the pocket. How many sacks could have been avoided if this was the case? I noticed this in the probowl on 2 or 3 of the sacks also. His first instinct is to stand up straight and try to juke/break the defenders tackle. The tackles are trained if they get beat to push them past the QB. When they do this for cam, they normally run right in to him. I really think if his pocket presence comes around, Cam can be unstoppable.

This is actually something that you are going to have to live with when you have a mobile QB.  Newton has the ability to beat the rush with his legs.  So, somethimes he is going to feel the pressure and then try to roll out of the pocket.  Somethimes this will work.....and sometimes he will roll right into the pressure.

A mobile QB is a challenge for an OL.  Yes, he may avoid some sacks.  But the OL knows where a pocket passer is likely to be.  They do not have this luxury with a mobile, scrambling QB.  The OT may correctly push his defender to the outside and up the field like he is supposed to....only to have the QB roll into that pressure.

However, given Cam's natural athletic ability.....I will this as his scrambling and running trumps it.

I remember Cam saying that being a playmaker is both a blessing and a curse, which I think is one of the most spot on things he's said to date.

Wait...Didn't just about every QB in the pro bowl this year got sacked at least sacked once of twice. This was a defensive battle. But I agree Cam needs to work on his footing. Plus get rid of Dorsey as the QB coach. But overall if we get Cam an oline that can protect him and get a WR like Jackson that he can throw to. Cam will be fine. That's why we need to invest our first round pick in this year draft on a tall WR who can run good route and that has a good hands and has some speed. If we can get a guy with skills. Then Cam is set for years to come.

spot on. people get so pissed when he takes the sack but forget the 72 yard td run he had because he was able to scramble. gotta take the good with the bad. part of who Cam is as a QB

yup he knows it.  he's made quite i few plays stepping up into the pocket tho specifically this one.

on the flip side, how many 3rd down conversions wouldn't have been conversions had cam not jukes out defenders and ran?

Agree... although there are times when climbing the pocket puts a mobile QB in an even better position to break contain once the pass rush has gone by and it would keep him in a better spot to continue searching for a target. Once you've rolled out to one side or the other, you've cut half the field off to yourself.

First things that needs fixing are Cam's protection and targets, would love to see what he could do with more than one receiver who can get separation on a consistent basis.

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
