If it comes down to us and the big spenders in the league for Greg Hardy

I honestly believe someone will give up their first rounder for him. Look at the pass rushers in this draft. Outside of clowney which one can you say will be better than hardy and be as good as hardy is right now.

Problem is that he has to be willing to accept a trade to whomever is willing to give up a 1st rounder for him. If he doesn't like the trade partner or he wants to make 12 mil this year and then hit the open market next year he can refuse to sign long term with them and the trade is dead.

No team will negotiate a trade before you tag him, because you could be bluffing so they'll wait to see if he ends up hitting the market and if you tag him and then start trying to trade him they know you can't really afford to keep him at his tag price so you are negotiating from a position of weakness.

Tag and trade sounds good, but it rarely happens because it's very difficult to actually make it work and once you tag someone you're stuck with them at the tag price, so you better to be able/willing to live with them at that price.
