Tony Gonzales: Matt Ryan's not an Elite QB

Before you can put this in context you have to know what his definition of elite is.  He might not put Cam or many other quarterbacks outside of the usual 4 or 5 in that category.

That may well be but the best thing Tony Gonzalez could have done is to have said nothing at all, especially since Matt Ryan had been his QB all those years. I was sort of surprised to read that he said this.

That's why you don't pay players like matt ryan elite money. The falcons will be stuck with an above average qb who will get them some wins but won't be able to mask the flaws of the rest of the team due to the space matt ryan's salary cap fills up. Good Job atlanta. LOL

Only three?

Out of  P. Manning, Brady, Brees and Rodgers, who did you leave out?

only manning and brady are in the playoffs EVERY year since the last 12+ seasons despite who is injured or deficiencies on their teams.  Rogers is getting there as well.  If you label too many guys as elite, well is elite really elite?

    • Then why are they paying QBs so much compared to other players? QB are making so much it's harder and harder to pay other players. If a guy plays like 1 of 11 then there pay should be in line with that. Not all QB should be breaking the bank just because your next or a former 1st rounder There is a reason they say try to win it all on a QB rookie deal because after that they can cripple a team on what it can do. I would rather not do that for a bottom 1/3 QB. Cam and Jake have been the only QBs worth investing long term into this team has had I would rather not lower the bar. If a guy don't got the IT factor and it shows I would rather not invest long term into them and keep looking
    • Aho…come out and prove me wrong boy.
    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
