Crisis averted

"We're going through our process, and Steve is a part of what we're doing going forward," Rivera said. "How big of an impact he's going to have for us, that's going to be determined as we go through the draft process and through free agency. We'll see.

"It's all about the evaluations. We have to look through everything. There's a lot of scenarios that we're putting together as a football team. But Steve's part of who we are, and we'll go from there."

Time to calm down, people.

Yea, I posted that in the smith tread. Right around that point, he's asked if there's a situation that would have smith not on the team and he said I don't know, completely side stepping the question.

Regardless Smith is going to be asked to take a pay cut so they don't have to pay him the 3 million option bonus or give him the extra season.

If he declines a straight up pay cut, there's a good chance he's cut. It's up to smith to accept the pay cut.

He's safe unless we get something comparable in FA or the draft for cheaper.

Steve Smith is more than likely "safe" regardless. It's just a matter of a warrior transitioning from THE guy to a role player in the twilight of his career that can still be great in spurts.  The situation kind of reminds me of the lyrics from a song by country artist, Toby Keith:

" I'm not as good as I once was

But I'm as good once, as I ever was"

Seriously, we are not cutting the only WR on the roster (not literally).  Right now, evaluations are related to contracts and the cap, not roster spots.

I would add that it takes WRs a bit of time to develop, and every time Gettlemen is  asked about WR, he mentions Tavarres King.  I get the feeling that King and possibly McNutt will play in 2014.  Add a stud from the draft, possibly a free agent (Hixon?  Ginn?) and the WR corps is better.
