THE Todd McShay mock 1st round: WR?

The way that mock draft shook out, it's the exact pick I would've wanted for us.  No complaints from me.

With that said, I don't understand this infatuation with Bortles.  I watched three UCF games this year and I never saw a future NFL starting QB.  The guy is Blaine Gabbert version 2.0.  He has all the measurables and physical tools you could ever want and people are trying to convince themselves that he's an NFL QB.  Not sure how anyone could take this guy over Bridgewater.  Manziel is the QB wildcard.  I think GMs are gonna love him or hate him.  Personally, I think the guy is a gamer.  If he can handle the off field distractions, he's gonna make it.

I agree and disagree.  The guy with all the measurables and physical tools you could ever want happens to play for us, and his name is Cam Newton (I know we all hate his overexposure, but the next best is Luck).  I don't think Bortles will be a awful as Gabbert is, Gabbert was literally made up as a franchise QB by the media about a month before the draft with no professional scouting done on him.  I was hearing a decent amount of noise about Bortles when the college season was about halfway done (from the same sources who made some noise about EJ Manuel last year).

Manziel is going to surprise people in the NFL.  I think with Bridgewater he will have some mediocre/poor years until the team who drafted him surrounds him with a solid supporting cast.  I think he has a great understanding of the game, but he is going to need a solid Oline and weapons to make him shine because he just doesn't have the athleticism to dominate without it.  Johnny Football isn't an athletic freak, but he's scrappy as hell and will be able to make enough "WTF just happened" plays to garner national attention right off the bat.

Who said we're getting rid of Smith? Not G-man that's for sure. Only a bunch of ridiculous huddlers who have no clue what they're talking about. Smith will be here, in the slot, and a drafted WR or FA will be our #1 out wide.

I never said we were either and tend to agree with you. Was just saying a rookie #1 with no viable #2 spells disaster if that's what it comes down to.

I'd be extremely happy if the Panthers drafted Benjamin.  Let's face it, Cam is a tall QB.  Sometimes he overthrows his receivers because he is so tall.  Having a player like Kelvin Benjamin at 6'5 would be such a huge weapon not only in the red zone, but he could be a deep threat too.

Cam's height really has nothing to do with his overthrows.

They are a product of footwork and mechnics.....sometimes due to lack of focus (happens to all QB's and they throw off their back foot....ball sails) and sometimes because he is wading through players and crap at his feet (keeping him from stepping into his throw).

But, I do not disagree with you that a big and physical receiver would be a GREAT addition.

Newton to Benjamin just has a nice ring to it.

The top 10 seems pretty wide open, should be another exciting draft.

Someone better take Clowney before ATL or TB get a shot at him. I bet they're salivating he drops like star did so they can rush Cam. Everyone seems to assume the Bucs draft another OLB, isnt David their rush backer? am I missing something? I know they got Lovie and all but that move sounds Hurneyesque.

Dee Ford might be a better option.

There are so many good and realistic receiving options this year I don't think I could be mad at our pick.  I think the most ideal and realistic guys are cooks and benjamin.  I really like what Odell Beckham did at LSU, he's definitely a guy that showed he would make the most of his opportunities, unfortunately he did too well at the combine to stick around as a late 2nd round option.  Heck I wouldn't be mad if Ebron hung around till the 20's and we traded up for him or nabbed ASJ.

Even though I think fixing the oline is a bigger need, I think it easier addressed via free agency and in the later rounds.  This draft is LOADED with talented tackles and guards in the mid picks (and I'm not even that worried about guard).  I feel if we land either one quality tackle or wide out in free agency we will be in prime position draft day to complete this team.

I do not think an OT capable of starting at LT this year will be available at 28.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
