The Good: By signing Jairus Byrd, the Saints will be an estimated three to five million OVER the cap. If Jimmy Graham appeals his tight end designation and wings, they will be an estimated eight to 10 million over the cap. 

 

The Bad: We are currently paying Jon Beason, Jordan Gross, and James Anderson $16,400,000 to NOT play for us. This is money counting against our cap. (according to Spotrac)

 

The Ugly: If we cut Steve Smith, that number to which we are paying starter caliber players to NOT play for us would rise to over $20,000,000. 

 

 

The second point isn't Gettleman's fault, but if the third is to come true, I'd have to question Gettleman's reasoning. Cutting Smith would do more bad than good, it seems.

Pretty sure this is correct. But we did something to his contract last year that voided the last two years. In doing that it may have done weird cap crap that no one understands.

So technically even though he retired he wasn't on the book anyway and we may be paying him for the voided years.

yeah why would we be paying gross?  i thought his deal was pretty much worked to be a one year contract last offseason.

We already paid those players that money. It's just hold over affect on the cap. Not that it's any better to think of it that way.

 

You can't get rid of the bonus money's affect on your cap no matter why the player left. You already paid it.

Sure it does. 89 brings a lot of quirks and baggage with him......and we are building a a team around Luke and Newton. If he makes there ownership of this team more difficult than it needs to be......it makes sense.

Designating Steve Smith as a 1th June cut would cost us 3M$ this year (and clear 4M$ cap), but would save us a hell load of money the next two seasons. How hard it will be to see Smitty leave, it does make sense business-wise.

why is no one talking about him coming back after being cut?  i mean, he just had a kid right?  why would he leave?  you'd think he come back for cheap or just retire.

because i haven't seen anything concrete that says there's bad blood.  for all we know, the media really fuged this up.  that would be awesome.

Considering he hasn't been cut yet I wouldn't be completely surprised if he isn't going to be cut. I wouldn't be surprised if he is either. But it's not looking like it is going to play out the way the "league sources" people suggested it would.
