Quick Question....

Apparently some people's definition of core player is someone who the team is built around in the future. Some people look at it as players the team is built around now. The way I see it, cores are things that are built around at the present time whether it's apples, nuclear reactors or football teams.

By that logic Peyton Manning and Tom Brady aren't core players because they aren't going to be in the league much longer. They're not any different than Gross who is an elite LT, and Smith who is an elite leader and key part of Cam's development.

Try again.

Someone had a good definition a few posts prior. When it comes to evaluating core talent, you look at what they can do now and what they can do for your franchise in the next few years, QB position sometimes excluded. Smitty was at one point a core player, now he's best utilized as a situational player.

Our core is Cam, Luke, Hardy, Star. The outer nucleus being Kalil and Olsen. That's just how it is.

Yes, a few years ago, absolutely.

His play of late has been just above average. Not at all impossible to replace.

His saying "was" is only because Gross is no longer playing and therefore it could not be present tense. He was last season and would still be next season if he didn't retire.

still core tho, anchoring the left side of that line and providing outstanding leadership for the team. i get where you're coming from i just think you're minimizing the importance of short-term core players. the sky's not falling but we ARE still losing important players

That's pretty stupid. Thats not the definition of core if you're a contender. Which we WERE. Since we have no chance of doing anything special then of course the old guys aren't core anymore. Might as well cut TD and CJ if we're tanking already

This organization has known the day was coming when we'd have to move on from Gross/Smith... the day you start planning for life after aging players is the day they stop being long-term core players.

What you're describing is a team in 'win now' mode, which we are not and should not be. We're not contenders the way Seattle, San Francisco, & Denver are; we're where Seattle was 2 years ago a playoff contender a few key pieces away from being championship material.

If we mortgage the future to try and win now (what Denver is doing) we'll be flat on our ass in 3 years and have to start all over again.

Thus you end up with a franchise that doesn't ever win 2 seasons in a row. Is it really hard to see why that is for you guys?

Core players are no longer core players when their production can easily be replaced via draft or free agency.

i can get on board with that, but what happens when you simply lose so many that you've (1) lost the ability to easily replace them and (2) when you've plugged a bunch of guys with no chemistry together instead of inserting new guys into an already-existing entity?

i think we'll be fine, and the hysteria is probably unwarranted, but guys like munnerlyn, mitchell, gross, and smith may not be as easily replaced as we seem to assume.

Steve Smith, Jordan Gross, Mike Mitchell, probably Captain Munnerlyn, probably Ted Ginn

Add in that Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly have most likely lost all interest in spending their careers here. So theres that.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
