This is not on Gett.

Don't forget also that this draft is deep in the WR class. I wouldn't be surprised if we double dipped at WR in this draft like we did DT last year. It was better to move on from Smith instead of delaying the inevitable money wise and development wise with Cam and his new WRs.

HIS new WR's.

"his" being the key here.

If we want Cam to be he leader and player we think he can be, Smitty had to go.  He could never lead this team outright with a guy like Smith in the mix.  There was just too much love for Smith and Smith' s toes were just too big.  I think Cam has been afraid to step on Smith's toes since he arrived.

Restructuring wouldn't help us in the long term cap wise.

And I don't believe anything reported that can't quote DG on it.

Do you not trust Smitty's agent either?  He's the one that said they weren't talked to about contract stuff.

If we *really* wanted Smith here, we would have kept him, period.  We saved barely any money sending him to play for the Ravens.  This was about DG's perception of Smitty on and off the field, not his contract.

You didn't read my whole post. I posted 2 reasons. I've already told you about the money part that you refuse to listen to.

because there is no money part.

If money is an issue with your franchise's best player, who has expressed desire to stay here forever, you talk to him about it and see if you can't work something out.

We're talking about a player that loves this organization with his whole heart and we didn't even talk to him about him staying.

This is not about the money, period.

Read my first post about the money and then realize restructuring wouldn't help us in the long term.

Hurney fuged this team in a lot of ways, but he gave us good talent.  he just sucked hard at contracts.

but to say that he's the reason we couldn't "afford" Smitty is dumb - not true in the least.

people use the word "afford" all the time without referring to money

Read my post again and then realize we didn't ever ask him to take a pay cut either.

Keep clinging to your belief this was about money if it makes you feel better.  It wasn't - that is incredibly clear from every single facet of what happened.

lol pay cut. How often does that happen?

I told you the TWO reasons why, but keep twisting my words to fit your argument.

It appears there may be a bit of both involved here. It's money and attitude that got Steve released. His locker room antics for lack of a better term just gave Gettleman a reason not to ask Steve to take a pay cut. It's obvious that Gettleman felt that Steve had become a problem for the team for whatever reason and didn't want him around any longer than he had to so this contract situation gave him an out to release him. It's that simple.

It's only played out if you want it to support your opinion. Hurney's contracts has put us in cap hell that is taking a couple seasons to get out of. We signed a lot of 1 year contract players last season and now they signed contracts with others teams more than what they are worth. We have to create space for the next couple seasons so that we can finally breathe and that involves many tough decisions.

Have to agree here. It's like people forget DG walked in the building dealing with a team 16M over the cap with a roster that only managed 13 wins out of 32 games since the massive contract signings of 11&12. He restructured someone else's screw ups (something you really don't want to have to do), signed 1yr minimum deals, and reworked deals to get us to the bad shape we are in right now. Oh, and they went 12-4 under those circumstances (1 short of the previous 2011 and 2012 totals). The only thing I can't give him credit for is Gano was picked up between firing Hurney and the DG hire.

Eff you Dave

Everyone keeps blaming Gettleman. This is not his fault. Blaming Gettleman for this mess is like blaming the street-sweepers toiling away each morning on Bourbon Street during Mardis Gras for the huge mess.

This is Hurney's mess.

When you rip off a big ass mutha-fvccn band-aid stuck on there for 5 years and reinforced with super glue, its gonna hurt a little.

We are bleeding now and damn near bleeding out but Gett's view is to get this roster right sooner than later. You cannot do that by taking on more contracts that are not a part of your end game just because you fear the alternative.

Every single player that we have lost is a marginal difference maker at their very best. The only one I wanted to keep out of any of them was Mitchell but we cannot pay him what others were willing to and still be viable in FA.

I don't want to get into just how ineffective players like Captain are in the grand scheme and just how ineffective players like Smith have become as of late because I know from reading over the years that most of you are way too emotionally attached to your heroes to tolerate ANYTHING negative being said about them. That said, they all got overpaid in their new contracts. Congrats to them.

Money is what it is all about. The sooner the fans realize what everyone else involved with the NFL already knows, the better off they will be.

So we run a style of offense that cheap players can run? We could've fugging cut Godfrey, signed Ginn and Mikell, kept smith, never signed Roman Harper. Last time I checked Shula was out offensive coordinator. Tell me, if your any offensive player, why come to Carolina?

Smith leaving had NOTHING to do with the money.

Ginn? Mitchell? Sure.  But not Smitty.

How can people say money had nothing to do with it.  When you look at what was owed to him on the remainder of the contract, and his age and decreasing production, you have to be blind.  I believe that there could have been other factors too, but its all heresay at this point.

Yeah, it's on Gettleman. He tagged Hardy without thought, and then forced our best receiver out.
