James Jones speaks about Panthers

look at the date on this blurb from the web site

The Panthers are "keeping tabs" on free agent James Jones.
They're also "slow-playing" Hakeem Nicks' market. GM Dave Gettleman took a similar philosophy into 2013 free agency and emerged with several big-time contributors, including Mike Mitchell, Ted Ginn, Drayton Florence, and Travelle Wharton. After releasing Steve Smith, Carolina needs two starting receivers. Mar 13 - 7:23

I don't get what's happening with Jones. We all agree he's the best receiver left, but why hasn't any visited any teams that we know of yet? Why is he having to beg the Panthers to sign him? What are we missing here?

All these older wr s know that the draft this year is deep with wr s.  they are getting more worried than the huddlers - after all its their livelihoods  and he knows we need wr s.

i'll also add

2 years ago jordy nelson and greg jennings missed significant time.

James Jones was the #1 and produced 14 tds in that season.

In the games they missed Jones had 4 tds in 4 games. 3 against Chicago's D.

The guy can handle #1 corners. He's big and physical. Not very fast but he reminds me of a Boldin type player

B.B.But.... I thought no one wanted to play for the panthers now that free agents know there is an evil miser for a gm. Anyway I hope gettleman can offer him something that is attractive both for the panthers and for him.

It doesn't mean no one want to collect a few millions from the panthers either. There isn't exactly a long list of teams competing for his services either.

I like him more than Nicks. He knows what he is. All the vet WRs that are homeless are dying to get picked up because of the depth in the draft. I'd be happy to have him in a Carolina uniform.

This is when Gettlemagic happen! Value FA. Don't be surprised if he signs super cheap. Now if he doesn't... I will scratch my head mightily.

Read nowhere concrete that we are even looking at him apart from joe person saying he's the next obvious WR to look at, we made contact with nicks but didn't actually offer him a contract just talked options with him, but like most stories what's true and what isn't!? It's fine he wants to play for us infact I love that and I'm sure other players do too but do we want him?, until I hear he's visiting I'm not holding my breath

The only thing somewhat concrete was rappaport saying that were keeping tabs on him. Wondering if him now saying this could catapult any contract talks

    • FA may or may not be the best option each time. You know as well as I do that the LT is the highest paid position on offense behind QB and WR. If you have cap concerns, it would be better to draft a quality LT and hold him for 3-4 years before you have to sign him to a long term (and expensive 2nd contract). I wouldn't want to acquire a run stuffing DT in FA if I could get a younger one much cheaper in the draft.  Let's say no good Safties are on the market when prior to drafting. Once again you'd go to the draft. FA is a good way to feel out the roster prior to the draft, but it's possible to REACH there too. FO's usually end up over playing guys (at least at certain positions) who have already peaked. Besides, you always have to consider that the team that let them go didn't think they were worth the price they were asking to retain them. That certainly applies to our defense. We could draft the BPA at any level of our defense and immediately improve our team. A stud on the line beside DB would help the the run and pass defense. Our LB core needs a thumper/impact player at any position. We need another CB to play alongside JC. We have yet to see a Safety on our roster significantly impact a game this year.
    • Maybe Rod will change it up and slot Bussi in net. Why risk the inevitable injury to Freddie this early in the season against a team that will likely win regardless.  Just show up and play to win, that's all I ask.
    • Well, I feel the same way about pharmaceutical, junk/fast food and political ads. They all cause active and KNOWN harm to the populace but we are the penultimate corrupt Western country, so that's just where we are as a society.
