Lets be honest the only bad move Getts has made is releasing Smitty

And its not because I'm against releasing the best player in franchise history, but because there is no one better on the roster and the cap relief is minimal. Other than that, what has Getts done wrong? For years huddlers complained about the asinine contracts Hurney gave out, now fans are mad when we don't break the bank for players who aren't worth what they are getting paid when they are simply role players. Guys like Mitchell, Ginn, Munnerlyn are role players, they can be replaced. Paying guys like that aren't getting us out of cap hell. You must also look at the contracts ahead of Getts in Cam, Kuech, and Star. Getts is making the tough and right decisions like it or not.

And not locking Mitchell and Ginn up before Free Agency began, and not picking up Nicks when he is only going to be paid 1 year 3.5 mil by the Colts, and not showing interest in solid FA WRs when they've clearly shown some interest in us. Smitty is NOT the only mistake Gettleman has made

I think the way he handled the Smitty situation in addition to not even given him the respect of discussing his contract with him was a big mistake.  I think he possibly made a mistake by not locking up Mitchell before FA started, but who knows how that went down.  Maybe Mitchell was asking for more than Gettleman was willing to pay.  We absolutely couldn't afford to overspend on guys like him and Ginn and Captain.  I think he is possibly making a mistake not taking our WR situation more seriously.  He'd know Nicks better than we would, so if he didn't want him at $3.5mil p/y then I'll trust his judgement on that.  But it's hard not to believe a guy on a 1 year deal with his potential wouldn't be worth that.  Overall I don't think he's doing a bad job at all, I still have an overall very positive view of him.

I just HATE how he handled the greatest player with the greatest heart we've ever had.

I'm in the group that believes tagging Hardy, this fuging us royally, was the absolute worst decision he's made thus far.

It might be.  If we don't get him locked up long-term and end up just cap strapping ourselves severely this year to get one more year out of him, then it's going to be a colossal fug up.

Releasing Smitty looks bad financially for 2014, but keeping him locked us into paying him much more for the following 2 years. $9 million at age 37?  That is way above his worth.  Those checks would be required while Cam and Luke's deals were being negotiated.

The "behind the scenes" locker room reasons will stay in the locker room--at least I hope they do.  Smitty has a kind heart--he gave $100K to the victims of the Theater shooting in Colorado, he contacted "Crying kid," and he shared a sense of loyalty to Mr. RIchardson and the organization.  That is why it is bitter.  However, Gettlemen does not get involved with the emotional side.

So I do not think it was a dumb move as a whole, but it sure hurt this season.  However, any responsible GM with an eye on the future (not like Hurney, in other words) would have reluctantly done the same thing.  It was not easy for Gettlemen.  He knows how good Smitty is.

I didn't like it because I thought Alexander and Addison could fill in and we could (maybe) draft a player to groom.  However, I would like to add to your opinion by saying, it would be worse (in my opinion) to lock him into a long-term deal before the season begins.  The reason?  You don't buy stock at its highest point.  I am guessing Hardy does not get 15 sacks this year.  If he does, pay the man and (maybe) Johnson's deal is at a point where it can be adjusted. If he does not, negotiate a more reasonable contract or let him walk.

I would rather have 3-4 free agents than one Hardy, but that is me.  Gettlemen is from the Giants where they appreciated their pass rushers.

To me, only a QB is worth $13million.

Realistically no one can say whether cutting Steve Smith was a good or bad move yet. Not until the season has been played.

This. And the Ravens rarely make mistakes in player acquisitions, as Newsome does an excellent job with his scouts.

That being said, for us, whether you agree the move needed to be made or not is not the issue... the way he did it was. It set the precedent for what has followed and when you compare this move with other moves (Still no long-term deal with Hardy, Godfrey still on the roster with less career production and same cap # as Smitty, missing on multiple FA "targets"), to everyone but Gettleman, we appear headed towards a huge step back.

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
