To B(PA) or not to B(PA)

I actually did a bit on true BPA - on the assumption the team's board was the various draft lists I was looking at, what would we be picking at 28, 60, etc based on who was the best player "left"?

in some cases you get a better player, gaining a round of value over the first three rounds.  In some cases you draft a QB and two DTs.

nice work.

ive prepared myself for a unlike-able pick, in the sense its not a OT, WR or DB. if its DT or LB, i trust the team/scouts/docs/dave made the right choice.

Eeeeehhh, why not?

I was in a bad marriage for eight and a half years, so I'm used to being held responsible for whatever goes wrong, anyway

Lol. I been with the wife for almost a quarter century. I'm right all the time. Most notably is when she agrees with me. Or my favorite. When she ain't around to begin with. jk

We may suffer some growing pains this year. Or, we may surprise once again. But I take solace in the fact that next year is the first year, we will be largely out from under hurndog moves.

only twice have they ever really called the name I was pleading for - Josh Norman (sorry) and Star Lotulelei.  In nearly 20 years, that's not a lot of guys I figured we were picking.

Just how it is.  Luckily they get more info than we do.

Before Star Lotulelei, the last player of my choice they took was DeAngelo Williams.

That's not to say i was against everyone else they took first, mind you.  They just weren't my first choices.

So easy to look back a year later, after drafted players perform/don't perform, and try to say it was/wasn't BPA???

Short was consider a high first round pick, and best 3tech DT in last years draft.

Slipping only cause of questionable motor.

I consider him a steal in the second round, specially with his impact on the field.

Now proving BPA with a few if the late rounders is certainly more debatable, IMO.

This discussion about BPA assumes that players can be easily graded and put into some kind of pecking order so that you can distinguish about whether need played into the equation or not.  Short was used as an example.  Gettleman has said that Short was BPA on his board and the question remains was he BPA purely based on talent or did need or other factors play into it.  Not to muddy the waters but it seems that Gettleman also values some positions more so than others. So an offensive tackle at lets say left tackle might get an automatically higher grade than lets say a running back who are easier to find through out the draft. Or if certain positions are deeper in this draft are they  given a lower grade than positions where the talent falls off more sharply. Given that money and cap space are big factors, need might also be highly influenced by how easily would it be to find the replacement in free agency after the draft or for what we can spend.

So is it BPA, BPA at a position of need. BPA weighted toward positions expensive to replace in free agency, or some form of combination of a number of factors so that our BPA might be very different than other boards for example where flashy players who will sell tickets are most highly valued for example.

    • He’s set financially for life barring complete fiscal lunacy. He has $12.3 million guaranteed. Think about that. Twelve million three hundred thousand dollars, he’ll be 28 years old when his contract is up and he’s completely forgotten about if he never plays another down in the NFL if he so chooses. Say after taxes he ‘only’ brings home $6M (fire your accountant territory) and parks $4M in a run of the mill mutual fund… good God… What I’m getting at, IF homie ain’t feeling the NFL, he has 12,300,000 reasons to take the fewest NFL edition ass kickings as possible while waiting out his very wealthy non-football future.  Obviously completely talking out of my a$$ with this… but if you hated contact, didn’t want to live with a completely wrecked body for the rest of your life and you know you’re set financially… what path would you take, assuming you’re cool with being a quitter (not calling him a quitter, I’m just playing out a scenario)? Why do so many first rounders bust? Where was he before his one year wonder if he was such a stud?  Everybody likes the dude on a personal level. How could you not? …. but I like seeing a winning product even more. He doesn’t play like his head is in the game. The Why is where the speculation lies and helps to clarify if his issues are ‘fixable’ or not.

    • Very likely that he needs another season or two to really find his groove.  It very well may not be here where he has his best season. He’s a physical standout, but he can’t seem to get his focus and mentality right. That non-catch where he didn’t get his second foot in bounds was a truly awful display of this. Every professional in this game makes that catch.  Last week, it was clear that he wasn’t playing in top gear.  Like so many young people these days, he wants success without working hard.  He wants maximum reward for minimum effort. He wants to rest on talent. But talent alone won’t cut it.  The foolishness of youth and inexperience.  He can have it all if he wants it.  Seems like he’s content to be a social media star and a forgettable football player.
