Wenning is best QB prospect in draft we haven’t heard about

Posted: April 2nd, 2014 | Gil Brandt | Tags: Ball State, Jamill Smith, Keith Wenning, Willie Snead

There were 21 NFL teams represented to see prospects work out indoors on FieldTurf at Ball State’s pro day on March 27. Among those prospects working out was Keith Wenning, who is probably the best quarterback prospect in this 2014 NFL Draft class that we haven’t heard anything about.

Wenning (6-foot-2 5/8, 223 pounds) has numerous workouts scheduled with NFL teams, including with the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots. Wenning — who stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine — is a two-time second-team All-MAC selection who threw for 4,148 yards, 35 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in 2013.

I like the idea of Brett Smith. You need a QB that can handle the pressure in this league.

Madden passing stats are cool and all but you need a guy that can stay alive.

Its why I don't get the Manziel hate, I think he'll be great and teams are going to regret passing on him. Sounds very similar to the hate Cam got.

Jimmy Clausen sucks,Joe Webb kind of does too and Anderson can't be here forever. I guess they figure it's time to get serious about finding a good #2 QB.

There is no way we re-sign Clausen.

    • Needs to be a run heavy game. They have allowed 121+ on the ground in the last 3 games including 180 to Tampa yesterday. If they do the whole crowd the box deal like they did against us, push the ball downfield. If we can do it to the Rams and Falcons we can do it to them.
    • Rushing attempts PG are actually the 5th lowest since 1990.
    • team are playing lots of 2 high shell trying to take away the big plays.  But I mean, defenses being scared of QB play.....aids the run game.  I mean, don't pay the QB and have the threat....the safeties aren't going to be fixated on taking away the deep pass and can play the run and cheat on pass attempts.  I think what you are seeing is the most elite QBs are flat out being game planned for to take away the big play.  But if you aren't an elite QB and vertical threat QB.....defenses flat out aren't going to make that league wide shift on your offense.  Take a Bryce.  I would imagine most of his INTs are made by opposing safties over the course of his career (who aren't taking away the vertical but cheating to make plays on the intermediate balls)
