Sometimes, with a guy like Avant or Cotchery an opportunity is all they need to shine. The NFL is a crowded place for players. I'm certain that there have been plenty of players that could have developed into starters if given a fair chance. Many a depth chart has made that virtually impossible for guys under contract. I really like what I hear about both of them, and I wouldn't be shocked if they turn out to be more valuable than they are currently getting credit for.

the people mad at our WR situation, and complaining that we are signing a bunch of WR-3 dont realize what we had last year on the roster in terms of WR

 

last year:

(Olsen - true #1)

Smith - #2 receiver masquerading as #1.  maybe even a #3 for the upcoming season

Lafell - #3 (maybe 4) receiver forced  to play as #2

Ginn - #3 receiver

Hixon - #4/5 receiver (only had 7 receptions last year)

Pilares/kKng/Mcnutt - backups (or IR)

 

this year:

(Olsen - #1, though ideally suited to be a #2)

Crotchery - #2 receiver

Avant - #3 receiver (assuming we sign him)

Underwood - # 4/5 receiver

Pilares/King/Mcnutt - as of now still backups

draftee????

 

so its not like we are replacing 1s and 2s with 3s and 4s.  We are replacing 2, 3 and 4s with 2, 3 and 4s and saving a lot of money by not resiging the same guys (yah we will have to wait until next year to see the real savings from smith)

 

of course we will get at least one receiver and likely a te in the draft, plus extra time for the pilares/king types to develop

This is mostly true (none of the new guys are as good as an old Steve Smith though) but the problem isn't replacing the old guys it's that the Panthers need to be BETTER than last year and right now some people see that as unlikely.

I don't see how anyone could be against signing Avant. He is one of the most reliable possession receivers, and will likely come for veteran minimum. Absolutely no downside, and he'll bring great leadership and lockerroom personality.

crotchery was objctively better than Smith by some measures last year, but overall was a VERY similar level player.  Plus he is 4 years younger, thus its not outrageous to expect Crotchery to be better than smith in the upcoming season

 

Avant was overall very similar to lafell.  They look even more similar overall if you look at Avant's previous 3-4 seasons before Kelly arrive.  Both are very average, though useful, players. 

 

Ginn was/is better than underwood + ginn is a top notch KR.  that said, underwood can play that role.

It's just a cue for the crowd that complains about the same thing anytime the receiver situation comes up in any capacity.

Exactly. That's why I think we only draft one wr within the first 3 rounds. Not enough room if they truly want to give mcnutt and king a shot.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say Cotchery was objectively better than Smith last year. No its not "outrageous" to think he could put up similar numbers to Smith's 2013 but it's also not outrageous to think he could fail to put up better numbers.  My point was that Carolina had one of the worst receiving corps in the league and a depth chart with Cotchery, Underwood, Avant (maybe) and a couple complete unknowns is not reason to believe it'll be better next year.

      Roger all that. Do you think BY avoided any sacks last game? This oline is not what you're touting them to be. They are much better then 2023! Much much much better than 2023. But come on now, you'd expect this expensive oline (most are run blocking specialist) to at least dominate in the run game every game.  And... I keep telling you our WRs and TEs are not that good yet. I mean last Sunday was a prime example. Our receiving targets never make plays like those. Never. And this is from one of the worst teams in the league. Shough could have easily had 3 INTs if not for his receivers making plays on the ball. Our guys just don't do that. XL almost allowed an INT backing up out of bounds instead of coming to the ball. And everyone would have blamed that on BY. That's why he doesn't throw to that dude. I can't recall a game except maybe the second Falcons game - maybe, where I thought our receivers could possibly be better than the other team's. I think TMac and Coker have a lot of potential. But they're aren't consistent. But they're young and WILL improve. I'm confident of that.  I don't agree that BY was drafted to only stand in the pocket. He has always been best off schedule - for better or worse.

      Do you think you will get a direct answer?  Icky giving up 5 pressures (playing hurt in his defense) by himself and Bryce only getting sacked once tells you he played well in the pocket.  He extended plays and converted some tough downs.

      I've been very apprehensive about potentially firing yet another head coach. But Canales needs to focus on being a head coach first and foremost and begin handing off some responsibilities like playcalling duties and begin overseeing the entire team or we need to assess all possible ideal HC candidates in the offseason.
