Panthers running back DeAngelo Williamswas shocked to learn that none of the wide receivers who caught passes for Carolina last year would be back this year.

Asked on NFL AM about the departure of veteran receiver Steve Smith, Williams said he hated to see Smith go, but it went beyond just that. Williams said that he doesn’t know what the front office is thinking at the receiver position.

“We lost them all,” Williams said of the Panthers’ receivers. “That was tough, man. I played with Steve for eight years, and I know the chip he has on his shoulder, and he’s a playmaker. I couldn’t believe that we made those moves. Like, I’m still in shock. Not only did we lose him, but Ted Ginn Jr., Brandon LaFell, and [Domenik] Hixon.”

Asked if he feels that losing receivers puts more pressure on the running backs, Williams answered, “No, it puts more pressure on our front office because you make these moves, getting rid of four receivers, you’ve got to bring in guys.”

So far, the guys the Panthers have brought in are Jerricho CotcheryJason Avant and Tiquan Underwood. Williams was careful not to criticize his new teammates, but he clearly isn’t convinced that the Panthers can be as good in the passing game this year as they were last year. In that skepticism of the Panthers’ receiving corps, Williams is far from alone.

We can't be as good as the 28th offense in the league D-Will?  I mean, really?

I never liked DeAngelo. Just something about him. I don't believe these were great comments to make. He is trying to say that if the offense takes a step back it's the fault of the front office, not the other offensive players on the field.

If the people you bring in to replace those you let go are actually worse, then yes, it's the fault of the front office.

But the offseason isn't over yet.  Dwill knows this. We'll see how the draft goes.

Stewart and Deangelo have both made some comments/tweets this offseason about their frustrations. Want some of these guys to stay? Offer to take an outright paycut for doing nothing but riding a bicycle (Stew). I'm not going to knock a player getting his money and wanting all of it (I probably would too)...but at the same time, don't open your mouth about money issues and losing guys to the media when you're a huge problem to our current issue.

Instead, they can currently be found counting their Hurney money, being arguably the two biggest problems on the team cap wise.

I am still not convinced the people we brought in are worse then those let go. Dwill just needs to keep his mouth shut and play. If DeAngelo is in such distraught and shock about this then let him take a pay cut off his awful contract that is holding back the team so they can go get better WR that will make him feel better. I cannot wait until he is cut.

    • It can happen but it’s nothing like the NBA. One player doesn’t make the difference in the NFL that one player can in the NBA. Also, there are just not the same amount of trades and even opportunities. Because the NFL isn’t just one stud away, you don’t get a lot of opportunities like Miami did with Tua or the Jets did with Zach Wilson. Both teams got multiple 1sts for players they traded (Jets had 5 1sts in 2021-2022 and Miami had 5 1sts in 2020-2021) and both got top 5 picks to select a QB. They both made some good and bad picks but Miami turned Tua into multiple playoff appearances even though Tua isn’t elite. Wilson was just so bad that the Jets still sucked. We had our opportunity in 2022 where we would have had 6 1sts and 4 2nds in 2023-2025 and probably had a top 5 pick in 2023 or 2024 for a QB without trading up. Unfortunately, Fitterer didn’t have the foresight to realize a full rebuild was necessary and when a team offers you 2 1sts and a 2nd for a non-QB like Tunsil and Burns, you take it. One thing I wish trades had in the NFL that they have in the NBA is protected picks. A moron like Fitterer could have a top 5 protected pick so his terrible GMing doesn’t accidentally give the Bears the #1 overall pick because the moron Fitterer incorrectly thought we were 1 player away from the playoffs.
    • Anyone that believes getting a couple late season wins to end the season at 4-13 while picking 9th in each round, other than 2-15 with the 1st pick in each round is not being realistic.  It happens nearly every other year, Jags gave the browns a insane package to move from 2nd to 5th. If not for late season pointless/everyone forgets late season wins the Panthers would have gotten that franchise changing package. Not to mention Panthers would have had Herbo and Sewell in other years, but nope. Do I need to bring up da bears??? The goal is long term winning in order to make the playoffs, one season to tank could spark it with a Burrow that's gets sacked 60 times on the way to a SB.  I want to win as bad as anyone, but the second the Panthers are eliminated from playoff contention, the ONLY solution is to lose the remaining games to gain a better chance to never do that again. No other answer.
    • Looks like Dallas will be week 6..   It's likely going to be a late late late BYE week, ugh Last game of season @ tampa (warm-ish weather game, hopefully.  Well, not "cold", at least)
