Mock(ery)

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

From Bryan Strickland's latest "Mocking the Panthers" (link)

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com
DT Louis Nix, Notre Dame

The Panthers selected defensive tackles with their first two choices last year. Would they go there again? With the re-signing of defensive tackle Colin Cole, the top nine defensive linemen on the roster last year are all back for the 2014 season.

The mountain of a man that is Nix can help someone situated in the latter stages of the first round. By the way, Drafttek.com lists Nix's teammate at Notre Dame, defensive end Stephon Tuitt, at No. 28 on its big board.

---

Gil Brandt, NFL.com
DT Ra'Shede Hageman, Minnesota

Brandt says that the 6-5, 310-pounder Hageman "has size, power and explosion but lacks consistency, otherwise he would be ranked higher. He might be too tall to play defensive tackle in the NFL but is good enough to convert to end."

Flexibility is always a good thing, both when it comes to prospects and to draft strategies.

Josh Norris, Rotoworld.com
DE Jeremiah Attaochu, Georgia Tech

The three other analysts referenced in this article that go at least 50-deep with their prospects don't list Attaochu. That should serve as a reminder that while looking at the consensus is a good way to get a feel for the draft, NFL teams will have significant differences of opinion on their draft grades - causing the draft to play out in a way no one can accurately predict.

---

Charlie Campbell, WalterFootball.com
QB Derek Carr, Fresno State

While the Panthers try to take the best available player, that strategy has its limits. I'll go out on a limb and say Carolina will not choose a quarterback in the first round.

I can kind of see the DEs (though not the Georgia tech guy) but DTs?  And a quarterback?  Those would be surprises.

Can't wait for people not to read the context of the article and just see the names and get mad.

I read the article, and yeah the methodology is obviously not geared to right results (a guy like Gil Brandt would know better).

Still found the associations funny.

They're just taking the BPA mantra a little too literally.

Yes, GMan believes in BPA, but it's HIS BPA....not who's the best available according to McShay, Kiper, or any other dumbass writer out there.

We have many needs, including potential future issues at LB, DE and RB. I wouldn't be surprised if we snagged a couple at those positions if a BPA fell into Gettleman's lap.

But at QB? And Derek Carr to boot? C'mon now....

Just so people know what Tyler is talking about (from the article)...

With all that in mind, we'll set aside the mock drafts this week and instead look at several analysts' "big boards," which simply rank the top prospects in order.

Upon review of the 28th spot on those lists, another pattern develops: The Panthers could be in position to make their strengths stronger.

Compare to this from Seattle:

2010:

1st Round: OT Russell Okung - Starting O-line

1st Round:S Earl Thomas - Probably top safety in NFL

2nd Round: WR Golden Tate - Free Agent - Signed away from Seattle

4th Round:CB Walter Thurmond - Starting DB

5th Round: S Kim Chancellor - Starting SS

6th Round: TE Anthony McCoy  - No Clue?

2011:

1st Round: OG  James Carpenter - Starting O-line

4th Round: OLB KJ Wright - Starting LB

5th Round: CB Richard Sherman - Top 3 CB in NFL

6th Round: CB Byron Maxwell - Starting Nickel

7th Round: OLB Malcolm Smith - Starting LB, Super Bowl MVP

2012:

1st Round - DE Bruce Irvin - Starting DE

2nd Round - MLB Bobby Wager - Starting MLB

3rd Round - QB Russell Wilson - Starting QB

4th Round -  RB Robert Turbin - 3rd down RB

4th Round - LB Korey Toomer - No Clue

6th Round - CB Jeremy Lane - Depth DB

7th Round - DE J.R. Sweezy - Depth DL

Those 3 drafts are what turned Seattle into what they are today.  Those are 3 incredible drafts.  Just sad when you compare ours to them.

I got a feeling you meant this for the other thread (last five Panther drafts).

by far my favorite non-WR/OL/DB is DT Ra'Shede Hageman, Minnesota.  hes like a bigger star-like player, with similar questions of motor. cole is not safe and no long term answer is at DT after kk/star. hes a wild card player at 28, it wouldnt shock me.

    • Yeah lol well the interest isn’t really about seeking stimulation.  I wanted to see how actually bad it was.  And how much of it was women setting him up to be their cash cow.  That is the stuff that leveraged the Panthers into David Tepper’s hands. It is important in that sense.     The worst that I have heard is that he got them in the car and clumsily reached across to help them with their seat belt and made contact. With his arm. That was probably his big slick move. And I can almost guarantee he wasn’t rejected every time. It is easy to picture that action bringing his head close enough to the woman’s head to where he could go in for the kiss if he thought he got the green light.    I really don’t care if JR was a horn dog. We heard all our lives up until the last few years that one of the perks of being really old is that you can flirt with the young women and it is not just tolerated but expected. So he was keeping a tradition alive at some point 😂
    • Well I rubbed some dirt on it and am still here just not optimistic about the future of the QB position. Even what I had accepted as a ceiling raised to an acceptable level turned out to be a bit of a mirage, upon rewatch of the WC game.  Good plays were there yes, but some pretty bad ones too that the good ones late in the game kind of obscured. I have to downgrade that a little.  Especially after rewatching the last 4 plays. I remember the arguments about he did his job the WRs didn’t but that was really just that last muff by Coker I think it was on our final offensive play.   To the future: I know what my level is for paying him and recommitting, but I don’t have any confidence that the team shares my high bar.    But thanks for the pep talk
