Trading down out of the 1st round

I've seen this mentioned a few times here. I've also seen it mentioned on NFL sites that some teams (like Houston or Jax) might like to jump back in to the lower 1st if a Bridgewater or Manziel has dropped and is still available.

Which would make Carolina's pick at #28 prime real estate if that came to pass.

But I read an article today by Pat Kirwan (cbssports.com) that pointed out something I had forgotten. Dropping from the 1st to the 2nd (or lower) round loses a team contractual advantages that aren't available outside the 1st.

1st round picks are locked into 4-yr contracts with a 5th-yr team option. Kirwan's piece said 2nd and below get three year deals then they are FA.

So if one does contemplate dropping out of the 1st round, the trade needs to be sweet enough not only to compensate for lost draft position but also for lost contractual advantages under the CBA.

panthers have a prime trade up spot, just look at the pats spending a lot time on QBs(could be classic smokescreen).to me the benefit form the panthers side would be along the lines of a 6/7th/future late rounder. since they are drafting early each round, their 7th rounders are "better", but its still a 7th. no interest in adding some late round picks, while missing out on a falling stud.

Every drafted player gets a four year contract, but first rounders get the additional option year. Undrafted guys get three-year deals. Point remains, though.

well since it is all about the money a lower draft position means paying less money. It could save money and get extra players.

Not a real difference b/t early 2nd and late first especially with the way it seems to be laying out talent wise.

thats a great point that, i forgot to mention. all agents rather their client NOT get pick 20-32, much rather be a second round without that 5th year option. its similar to agents not wanting their clients to be drafted 6th/7th, signing bonus are @ss and you get to pick a team with a better chance of sticking. sometime a player gets more money by being undrafted. its always about money and control.

ive also heard gms talk drafting 7th rounder for a player that they fell would be hard to sign, instead of a better player. sorta like college the teams already have a good idea of who will sign a UDFA deal, those coaches and scouts form relationships.

I would love for us to trade out of the first round and pick up two second round draft picks. I dont know the value of our 28th pick but I am sure we can atleast get a second and 3rd round pick for it, possibly two 2nd round picks and a 4th. I am sure we could get a starting OT and WR in the 2nd and probably get a good CB or TE  with the 60th pick. I doubt we will trade down but this would be a great draft to do it.

The Pats have made a living racking up draft picks this way.

I have mentioned it since my first mock back in mid Jan.

Jax is a prime target.  Moving down to the top of the second and picking up an add'l third might get us the same guy we'd have to settle for at 28.

Moses, Adams, Robinson, Benjamin, Cyrus, might all be sitting there at the top of the second.

As far as the 5th year option, generally teams will extend a guy before it gets to that point anyway if he is any good, so I don't see this as a deterrent
